About Precinct 444: The National Law Enforcement Museum Podcast

Over a decade of planning and persistence in the making, the National Law Enforcement Museum has opened its doors to the public. Finally, citizens and law enforcement professionals from diverse perspectives and backgrounds will have a place to share in the vibrant story of American law enforcement. Within the walls of the Museum’s strikingly contemporary exterior, artifacts from our collection of more than 25,000 objects tell the story of American law enforcement – past, present, and future – and engage visitors of all ages in memorable, immersive and experiential exhibits. More importantly, we’re proud that the Museum will serve as a platform for constructive dialogue to help strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Collective Wounds: Trauma’s Hidden Effects on Law Enforcement and Communities

In this episode of Precinct 444, host Josh Bronson sits down with Katie O'Mailey, LCSW-C, LICSW, RYT, an Appointee of the Maryland State Commission on Trauma-Informed Care, to explore the complex and often overlooked topic of trauma within law enforcement. Together, they unpack how trauma can manifest in police officers, both on an individual and organizational level, and the ripple effects it can have on mental health, decision-making, and community relationships. The conversation dives into: · Individual Trauma: How repeated exposure to high-stress and life-threatening situations impacts officers physically, emotionally, and psychologically. · Collective Trauma: The shared experiences within departments and communities following critical incidents or systemic challenges. · Generational Trauma: How historical and cultural factors influence policing and community trust over time. · Healing and Resilience: Practical strategies for officers, agencies, and communities to foster recovery, resilience, and well-being. Katie brings her expertise as a licensed clinical social worker and law enforcement trainer to provide insights on recognizing trauma symptoms, breaking stigma around mental health in policing, and creating supportive environments for healing. https://nleomf.org/museum/precinct-444/
