The Reversal Accomplished

As we close our sermon series in Esther, we are reminded that God is always at work, even when His hand seems hidden. What began as a threat against God’s people was turned into deliverance, gladness, and remembrance as the Jews were rescued from their enemies and established the feast of Purim. Through Esther and Mordecai, we see God’s providence, His protection, and His faithfulness to preserve His people. Esther invites us to remember that sorrow does not have the final word, and that God is able to turn mourning into joy for His glory and the good of His people.

The Great Reversal

In Esther 8, the king gives Haman’s estate to Queen Esther and elevates Mordecai to a position of authority, entrusting him with the king’s signet ring. Esther then pleads for her people, asking the king to reverse the decree that threatened the Jews’ destruction. While the original edict cannot be revoked, the king allows Mordecai to issue a new decree granting the Jews the right to defend themselves across the empire. As the message spreads, the Jewish people experience great joy and relief, celebrating God’s deliverance and the reversal of their circumstances.

Faith Under the Guiding Hand of God

In this passage, Queen Esther courageously reveals to the king that her people are under threat of destruction and pleads for their lives. When the king asks who is responsible, Esther exposes Haman as the enemy, leaving him terrified. In his desperation, Haman begs Esther for mercy, but the king returns in anger and orders his judgment. In a dramatic turn, Haman is executed on the very gallows he had prepared for Mordecai, demonstrating God’s justice and providential care for His people.

A Divine Reversal

In Esther 6, the king’s sleepless night leads him to discover that Mordecai had once saved his life but had never been honored. At the very moment Haman arrives to request Mordecai’s execution, the king instead asks him how to honor someone he delights in—ironically leading Haman to describe a grand public celebration, assuming it would be for himself. To his shock and humiliation, the king commands Haman to carry out those honors for Mordecai. Mordecai is publicly exalted, while Haman leaves in disgrace, foreshadowing his coming downfall.
