Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays — our lives are shaped by moments we return to again and again because of what happened once. The people of Israel had a moment like that too. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies — the very presence of God — and make atonement for the sins of the entire nation. It was the most sacred day on the calendar.
