Kentucky researchers have announced an updated equine Salmonella vaccine after identifying antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella Saintpaul circulating in horses. Using whole-genome sequencing, scientists at the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center discovered genetic similarities among recent Salmonella cases and identified antibiotic-resistance genes within the bacteria. In response, researchers partnered with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association to update an existing vaccine by adding two new Salmonella subspecies to the formulation. But while the announcement has generated significant interest across the horse industry, important questions remain. How effective is the updated vaccine? What evidence supports its use? And what do horse owners need to know about this emerging equine health concern? In this video, we examine the science behind the discovery, the concerns surrounding antibiotic-resistant Salmonella, and why experts say more data may still be needed before drawing conclusions about the vaccine's effectiveness. š“ Whether you're a horse owner, breeder, veterinarian, trainer, or simply interested in equine health and horse welfare, this is a story worth following. #Horses #EquineHealth #Salmonella #HorseHealth #VeterinaryMedicine #Thoroughbred #HorseNews #EquineScience #HorseCare #KentuckyHorseIndustry ā±ļø CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction 01:40 Why Salmonella Matters in Horses 02:43 The History of Equine Salmonella Vaccines 03:52 Researchers Detect an Emerging Threat 04:13 What Is Salmonella Saintpaul? 04:34 Discovery of Antibiotic-Resistance Genes 05:40 Why Researchers Updated the Vaccine š Subscribe for weekly horse industry news, equine health updates, horse welfare discussions, FEI developments, dressage news, breeding stories, and veterinary research affecting horse owners worldwide. š Topics Covered: ⢠Antibiotic-resistant Salmonella in horses ⢠Salmonella Saintpaul ⢠Equine infectious disease research ⢠New horse vaccine announcement ⢠Whole-genome sequencing in veterinary medicine ⢠Kentucky Thoroughbred Association ⢠Hagyard Equine Medical Institute ⢠University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Center ⢠Horse health and biosecurity ⢠Emerging equine disease threats ā ļø Disclaimer: This video is for educational and informational purposes only and should not be considered veterinary advice.
