About Tasmeem Doha Podcast | Powered by afikra

Tasmeem Doha is a biennial international conference that focuses on unique and contemporary themes in art and design. Each edition of Tasmeem Doha is accompanied with a new season of this podcast series powered by afikra, showcasing the best people, works and efforts around the chosen theme of the event. For 2024, the theme is “Under Construction”, which is both a metaphor for creative research and a celebration and investigation of transformation. It is also a state that Doha has found itself in for decades: a transformation that has presented an outsized impact on the residents of the city. Under Construction will also explore the past, present and future of VCUarts Qatar’s flagship event Tasmeem Doha. As part of the 25th anniversary of VCUart Qatar's campus in Doha, the event brought together voices from the past, present and future of various disciplines involved in this cycle of rethinking and remaking.

Building Successful Modern Arab Cities | Yasser Elsheshtawy

Yasser Elsheshtawy – adjunct professor of architecture at Columbia’s GSAPP and non-resident fellow at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington – joins us on the Tasmeem Doha podcast to talk about his keynote speech from the conference “(Re)Constructing Urban Spaces: Unearthing the Palimpsest in Arabia”. This conversation delves into the concept of permanence and erasure in modern cities, looking individually at Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha and Riyadh as examples of modern urban spaces and realizations of our urban imaginaries. Thinking about cities as a culmination of societal and historic layers, Elsheshtawy shares insights on the lifecycles of cities, what we can learn from Dubai, and what he considers to be the most livable Arab City.  Yasser Elsheshtawy is a Professor of Architecture and Independent Scholar. His scholarship focuses on urbanization in developing societies, informal urbanism, urban history and environment-behavior studies, with a particular focus on Middle Eastern cities. He is currently a Non-Resident Scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, DC and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia GSAPP where he teaches two courses: “Housing in the Arab World” and “Arab Cities & Cinema.” Connect with Yasser 👉 https://twitter.com/yasser09?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor [https://twitter.com/yasser09?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor] Tasmeem Doha is a biennial international conference that focuses on unique and contemporary themes in art and design. Sour Things: On Food Practices for Pressing Matters | Mirna Bamieh | 25 Years of VCUarts Qatar

In this episode of the Tasmeem Doha podcast, artist Mirna Bamieh takes us around the world of fermentation and preservation, expanding on what participants of her workshop "Sour Things" learn. Bamieh explains the symbolism and role of fermentation in bringing attention to pressing world matters, and her fascination for the delicate balance between decay and "liveness". We discuss her work through Palestine Hosting Society, saving Palestinian recipes and their stories, and the precious food practices that they represent. Finally, we think about the disappearance of the pantry in our homes and the simple power of creating space as a form of resistance. Mirna Bamieh is an artist whose work explores the politics of disappearance and memory production by unpacking the social concerns and limitations of Palestinian communities amid contemporary political dilemmas. Bamieh's work since 2019 has focused on the process of fermentation. Using her degree in culinary arts, she brings storytelling and food together through her live art food project Palestine Hosting Society.
