History has been made by Louth, who are through to their first All-Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-final in 68 years after a thrilling victory over Monaghan at Croke Park. In one of the county's greatest ever championship performances, Louth overcame the loss of midfielder Seán Callaghan to a first-half red card to record a remarkable 0-27 to 2-18 win. Playing with 14 men for almost the entire match, Ger Brennan's side showed incredible resilience and determination to book a place in the last four for the first time since 1957. Fresh from ending their long wait for a Leinster title, the Wee County's fairytale season continues, and they'll now return to Croke Park to face Mayo for a place in the All-Ireland final. Friday marked 30 years since the murder of investigative journalist Veronica Guerin, whose killing in broad daylight on the Naas Road on June 26th, 1996, shocked the nation and became a defining moment in Ireland's fight against organised crime. Veronica was renowned for her fearless reporting on Dublin's criminal underworld at a time when few were willing to expose the activities of some of the country's most dangerous gangs. Despite receiving threats and surviving an earlier attack, she continued her investigations, determined to shine a light on organised crime and those behind it. Her murder prompted sweeping changes in Ireland's criminal justice system and remains one of the most significant events in modern Irish history. To mark the 30th anniversary, crime correspondent Paul Williams, who worked alongside Veronica and was also a close friend, wrote a moving tribute in the Irish Independent over the weekend, reflecting not only on the day she was killed but on the remarkable person she was, the courage she showed, and the legacy she left behind. Renewed Hope for Carlingford Lough Ferry After Funding Announcement - 29/06/2026

A north Louth TD has welcomed new Shared Island funding aimed at boosting tourism projects around Carlingford Lough, saying it could help support efforts to restore the Carlingford Lough ferry service, which has not been operating this summer. €820,000 has been allocated for the further development of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland initiative, as well as wider tourism development in the area.  The funding is part of a broader €377 million package under the Shared Island Fund, which brings total Government investment through the scheme to more than €1 billion. Speaking about the announcement, Deputy Erin McGreehan said the inclusion of a feasibility assessment for the proposed “Loop of the Lough” tourism concept shows a clear commitment to exploring ways to make the ferry service viable and sustainable once again. Louth TD Says Government Must Do More to Prepare for United Ireland - 29/06/2026

The debate around Irish unity returned to the Dáil last week, with Sinn Féin urging the Government to move beyond cross-border investment and begin actively preparing for the possibility of constitutional change. Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú welcomed projects being delivered through the Shared Island Initiative, including the Narrow Water Bridge, but argued that the Government also needs to establish a Green Paper and a citizens' assembly, or a similar forum, to begin a national conversation about what a united Ireland could look like. Louth TD Accuses Government of “Mogging” Workers in Dáil Budget Row - 29/06/2026

Labour TD for Louth, Ged Nash, has accused the Government of “mogging” workers and families in last year’s Budget, using what appears to be the first instance of the slang term being used in the Dáil. Ged Nash made the remark during Leaders’ Questions as he criticised Tánaiste Simon Harris, drawing attention to a VAT cut for the hospitality sector alongside what he described as a lack of income tax indexation. He said the measures left many workers and families under continued financial pressure. The comments come ahead of next week’s reduction in VAT for food-led hospitality, which will fall from 13.5% to 9% as part of measures announced in last year’s Budget.
