Episode 6: Songs About Girls, Vol. 1 [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/SkaCastEpisode6.mp3] This week’s theme is self explanatory and an area that ska and reggae have explored extensively. Episode 5: London International Ska Festival

A quick programming note for anyone who cares. I originally conceived of a twice monthly podcast, each with a loose theme. But I also want to highlight new or active bands and those two concepts are fighting each other. So, I will do three podcasts a month: one that highlights “new ska” and two others that stick to some theme that allow me t idig into my collection of 3rd Wave ska, as well as Jamaican, 2-Tone and every style in between. OK, resume party… Episode 5: London International Ska Festival [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/podcast5.mp3] Twenty bands, “new artists”, are finalists and competing for a spot onstage at the London International Ska Festival 2012. I was able to lay my hands on music from 18 of the bands and they make up this episode of the ska-cast. I won’t do write-ups for each song this week because some of these bands are favorites of mine and some I have never heard of until I saw the list of bands on the LISF Facebook site [http://www.facebook.com/londonskafestival?sk=app_178091127385]. Episode 4: UK New Ska Spotlight

Episode 4: UK New Ska Spotlight [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/podcast4.mp3] Since I have been actively seeking out new ska, it’s been the British ska that has surprised me the most. You see, I always thought of British ska as being strongly aligned with the 60’s Jamaican sound, the famous 2-Tone bands or bands influenced by that original 2-Tone movement. What I found, in addition to what I described, was a strong ska punk scene. I always considered ska punk an American invention that took root in continental Europe, to an extent, but never thought that it existed in Britain. I was wrong. So a lot of this ska-cast was comprised of songs culled from excellent free samplers put out by Ska Mutiny Records and TNS Records. So while I highlight some other styles too, British ska punk is the surprise star of this episode. The Simmertones [http://www.thesimmertones.co.uk/] – “One Time Soon” – from the Presenting the Simmertones, Volume 1 [http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/presenting-simmertones-vol./id370074003] album A 7-piece outfit from Devon that is influenced by traditional ska sounds of the Skatalites and Desmond Dekker but plays it with their own British flair. Catchy and upbeat, they start off the ska-cast the right way. [https://i0.wp.com/www.thesimmertones.co.uk/page17/files/collage_lb_image_page17_19_1.png] The Estimators [http://www.facebook.com/theestimators] – “Prince of Peace” – SoundCloud track [http://www.facebook.com/theestimators?sk=app_19507961798] The Estimators are also influenced by the traditional ska and early reggae and seem to be more of a London party band than a proper recording group. But I do love their style and this track displays it properly. [https://i0.wp.com/a3.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/114/fefc9af670054df78724044f62fd7295/l.jpg] Tyrannosaurus Alan [http://www.myspace.com/talanuk] – “Tunnels” – from the Campaign [http://tyrannosaurusalan.bigcartel.com/product/album-pre-order] album London’s Tyrannosaurus Alan seem to be one of the big bands on the UK punk ska scene and they certainly have the chops. A big punk sound with a 4-piece horn section. [https://i0.wp.com/media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ldwesasaox1qe977s.jpg] Anti-Vigilante [http://www.facebook.com/antivigilante] – Virtue of the Vicious – from the Secure Beneath the Watchful Eyes [http://antivigilante.bigcartel.com/product/secure-beneath-the-watchful-eyes-debut-album] album Big energy 4-piece skacore outfit from Milton Keynes, UK.  From their Facebook page: ANTI VIGILANTE took the first half of 2011 out to recover from the passing of Drummer Oli Smith. Driven by the loss of both a band mate and best friend ANTI VIGILANTE are back with greater determination and conviction and ready to hit the road harder than ever. The band looks to be touring heavily through 2011 and 2012. [https://i0.wp.com/www.liveunsigned.com/images/artists/5684.jpg] Kids Can’t Fly [http://www.facebook.com/kidscantfly] – “Everyone” – Digital single [http://kidscantfly.bandcamp.com/track/everyone] Not a ska band per se, Southampton’s Kids Can’t fly are more a pop punk band with some horns thrown in. But somehow it still works and we od pride ourselves on featuring all aspects of the ska scene here, even the styles on the fringe. [https://i0.wp.com/a4.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/121/d1811106c408a5214433e9c1912dd007/l.jpg] The Hostiles [http://www.myspace.com/hostileska] – “True or False” – from the Always Looking Forward [http://hostileska.bigcartel.com/product/always-looking-forward]album Horn driven ska punk from Ayr, Scotland. These guys have been doing it for 10 years and seem to still be going strong… [https://i0.wp.com/a1.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/143/81002652448f493481266cda2385168e/l.jpg] Detached [http://www.myspace.com/detachedska] – “Rid of It” – from the None the Wiser [http://www.detached.bigcartel.com/product/none-the-wiser-ep] EP The most anthem-like of the songs featured this episode, xxx’s Detached is a fixture on the Uk ska punk scene [https://i0.wp.com/a2.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/78/47cecb49073448ada0b10eaff4c1f81e/l.jpg] Stand Out Riot [http://www.facebook.com/standoutriot] – “This is Not a Movement” – from The Gentlemen Bandits [http://www.standoutriot.bigcartel.com/product/pre-order-the-gentleman-bandits] album They describe themselves as a “7-piece Skacore Gypsy Punk Fest” that features a 3-piece horn section and a violin. From Manchester, they already have a couple of albums under their belts. [https://i0.wp.com/30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lnb6n4n2NN1qashjko1_500.jpg] Harijan [http://www.myspace.com/harijan] – “Curriculum” – from the TNS Records free sampler Manchester’s Harijan appear to be no more, which is a real shame.  Hard-edged ska punk with a wicked brass section. [https://i0.wp.com/a4.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/137/8cda4f353b4e4d46b857f1865cb36055/l.jpg] On the Turn – “Kidnap And Ransom” – ??? I can find nothing about this band on the interwebs. If you know something about them, let me know. Upbeat, melodic ska punk from London. The Fractions [http://www.thefractions.co.uk/] – “We Were Kings” – from the Release [http://www.thefractions.bigcartel.com/product/release-new-album] album Yet another Manchester band. 5-piece ska punk with yet another wicked little brass section. [https://i0.wp.com/a4.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/101/f7caec14652f4916bd6d640f8c54074a/l.jpg] SonicBoomSix [http://sonicboomsix.co.uk/welcome.cfm] – “Addicted to Bass” – from the Rude Awakening [http://sonicboomsix.co.uk/rudeawakening.cfm] album These guys remind me of Fishbone. Not is their sound but in their way to blend ska and reggae with a myriad of different styles, do it seamlessly and have it sound completely original. Uncategorizeable music from Manchester (again!). [https://i0.wp.com/www.xyzmagazine.co.uk/img/live_sonic_boom_six_engine_rooms_polly_hanrahan_250410_01.jpg] Rasta4Eyes [http://www.facebook.com/rasta4eyes] – “The Herb” – ??? Rasta4Eyes is a relative newcomer and skew far more to the ska/reggae side of the equation than punk. But they balance it well. Straight out of Liverpool. [https://i0.wp.com/a3.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/136/5667aa26b307447c983d510e1b79f632/l.jpg] The JB Conspiracy [http://www.facebook.com/thejbconspiracy?sk=info] – “1989” – from the This Machine [http://www.banquetrecords.com/dip034] album From Guildford, UK. Imagine if two tone kept growing up over the last 30 years. Yeah, it’s a weird description but it works for me. [https://i0.wp.com/a1.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/25/92dd05758f31472489322ac5d368d35c/l.jpg] The Kebabs [http://www.catchitkebabs.co.uk/] – “Bluelight” – from the Return of the Kebabulance [http://www.catchitkebabs.co.uk/return-of-the-kebabulance/] The Kebabs hailed from northern England and according to their website, are broken up. But they hint that some of the core members may continue on a new project. Which would be a good thing. [https://i0.wp.com/farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/5023092424_611152e6cb.jpg] The Talks [http://www.thetalks.co.uk/] – “Nothing to Offer” – from the Live Now, Pay Later [http://www.thetalks.co.uk/#/store/4552825990] album A very polished ska rock sound from these fellas from Hull. Quite an impressive resume for a band that hasn’t been on the scene that long. [https://i0.wp.com/a3.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/31/e35829af25cee808f539d53fc1f6d59f/l.jpg] The SkaSouls [http://www.skasouls.com/] – “Ten Out of Ten” – free download [http://www.skasouls.com/index.php?page=sounds&menuid=3] Another band from London with a more traditional sound and a catchy little 2-tone influenced tune. [https://i0.wp.com/www.skasouls.com/uploaded_images/rotating_gallery/NYE3.jpg] Nutty Skunk [http://www.facebook.com/nuttyskunk?sk=app_2405167945] – “The Phantom” – free download [http://www.reverbnation.com/nuttyskunk] I love my ska covers and this one is very good. Would liek to hear more from this band from Leeds. [https://i0.wp.com/a4.l3-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/5/04ff7810fc56e42cc7a8cdd22fd7d79d/l.jpg] Mr. Bligh [http://www.mrbligh.com/] – “Brand New Ting” – from the Is This England? [http://www.mrbligh.com/page3.htm] album Mr. Bligh is a one man band from Bristol blending ska with funk and other island sounds. The album is free and it’s pretty damned good. Episode 3: A Punk Ska Classic and New Ska Spotlight

This episode, we revisit a punk ska classic split CD, Skank for Brains and after that, highlight some new releases and new bands. Ska-Cast Episode #3 [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/podcast3PRC.mp3] Asbestos Records recently re-issued the Skank for Brains split album on vinyl [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] so I chose to play some tracks from the original Beach Records release. If there is such a thing as a punk ska classic, this album certainly qualifies. The Rudiments and The Suicide Machines (known then as Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines) recorded some of these songs for later releases but the rawness and energy of these original recordings is still a lot of fun to hear after all these years. I included the intro, intermission and end announcements on the original CD release, as well as couple tracks from Link 80 and Nothing Cool that were tacked on to the end of the album. When I say “new ska”, I am typically referring to brand new release from still active bands (like the Less Than Jake track I included this episode) or bands that are new to me, typically highlighting releases from the last 4 years or so. That’s the general definition I’m going with moving forward. The Rudiments [http://www.myspace.com/therudiments]– “Wailing Paddle”, “Sunday Morning Suspect” – from the Skank for Brains [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] album I talked about The Rudiments last week. Very underrated. The Suicide Machines [http://suicide-machines.com/] – “New Girl”, “Green World” – from the Skank for Brains [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] album Detroit based ska punk band who existed for 15 years. Link 80 [http://linkeighty.com/] – “Hey! What’s That Noise?”, “Time Won’t Heal the Pain” – the Skank for Brains [http://www.amazon.com/Skank-Brains-Rudiments/dp/B000000GYU] album As far as I can tell, neither of these songs were released on any subsequent Link 80 albums. Enjoy! Nothing Cool [http://www.myspace.com/nothingcool] – “My Life” – from the Skank for Brains album Nothing Cool was (and is) more of a pop punk outfit but do a catchy punk ska version on this Billy Joel cover. Less Than Jake [http://www.lessthanjake.com/] – “Life Led Out Loud” – from the Greetings from Less Than Jake [http://lessthanjake.limitedpressing.com/products/11032] EP New release from LTJ as they play with the Warped Tour this summer Urkel and The Winslows [http://www.urkelandthewinslows.com/fr_home.cfm] – “Murphy’s Law” – demo track [http://www.urkelandthewinslowsgiveaways.com/] Ska/Reggae/Rock from Brooklyn. Formed in October 2009, the band plans to have a full album out this fall. Shortstop From Tokyo [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shortstop-From-Tokyo/6213789946] – “Aged to Delusion” – from the Suck On This! [http://shortstopfromtokyomusic.bandcamp.com/] EP Third Wave style ska rock from Chicago. Murphy’s Kids [http://murphyskids.com/] – “I Still Miss You Alex Levine” – from the Departures [http://www.communityrecords.org/?page_id=3&category=31&product_id=59] album Band from Richmond, VA who have seemed to merge into the DC ska scene. Good poppy punk ska. The Sidewalks [http://www.facebook.com/thesidewalks] – “Ready, Set, Go!” – from the Better Late Than Never [http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/better-late-than-never/id335434042] album More Third Wave style ska from PEI, Canada. The band played a farewell show on August 4th but still have one last album coming out before the end of the year. Tip the Van [http://www.tipthevan.com/] – “Place Like Home” – from the Passion, Love and Pride [http://tipthevan.storenvy.com/products/37457-passion-love-pride-ep] EP I didn’t plan it this way but this is another band that just split up. Tip the Van announced that they are on “indefinite hiatus” earlier this week. A sad development as bands that feature sweet female harmonies are few and far between. The Brass Action [http://www.facebook.com/theBrassAction?sk=app_178091127385] – “Handyman” – random track from Facebook [http://www.facebook.com/theBrassAction?sk=app_178091127385] (?) Big brassy ska from Vancouver, BC. Royal City Riot [http://www.facebook.com/royalcityriot]– “I Should’ve Known Better” – from the Coast to Coast [http://www.megalithrecords.com/store/product_info.php/cPath/21/products_id/402?osCsid=731d98d168039919d9874b6956f6bc0a] album Ska from Long Island, NY. Green Room Rockers [http://www.greenroomrockers.com/] – “Bring It On Home To Me” – from the Green Room Rockers [http://greenroomrockers.com/wordpress/?page_id=53] album Indiana’s soul ska kings bring the soul in a big way on this Sam Cooke cover. Bigger Thomas [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bigger-Thomas/42216803467] – “Radics & Roger A Chat” – from the Steal My Sound [http://biggerthomas1.bandcamp.com/album/steal-my-sound] album New Jersey’s Bigger Thomas has been around for 23 years now and released their latest album digitally at the end of last year. Their bassist writes the excellent ska blog, Marco on the Bass. Bobby Pins & The Saloon Soldiers [http://www.myspace.com/bobbypinsandthesaloonsoldiers] – “The Revenge” – from the Bobby Pins & The Saloon Soldiers [http://jumpuprecords.com/blog/?p=1181]album A trio of female singers backed by early reggae beats from Dresden, Germany. And somehow, it all works out. The Fundamentals [http://www.thefundamentals.ca/] – “Leaving Me Behind” – from the Leaving Me Behind [http://thefundamentals.bandcamp.com/] EP Sweet, sweet Canadian ska from Montreal. Their latest EP is really, really good.   Ska-Cast Episode #3 [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/podcast3PRC.mp3]

Episode 2: The Asian Man Tribute Show

Back in June, Asian Man Records celebrated their 15th anniversary and I didn’t want that event to get too far in the rear view mirror before I gave a aural shout-out to one of the best ska labels of the Third Wave era and beyond. Sure, they do a lot of great punk rock too but Asian Man put out some of the craziest ska-influenced music….well, ever. You’ll get the idea as we range far and wide over the next hour. Ska-Cast Episode #2 [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11711544/podcast2AMT.mp3] Unsteady – “Tokyo” – from the Double or Nothing [http://www.amazon.com/Double-Nothing-Unsteady/dp/B000003OQ9] album Straight out of San Diego, Unsteady combined traditional jazzy ska riffs like “Tokyo” with ska and soul infused rock. Bitch Bitch Bitch was their final full length release.
