Asbestos Records recently re-issued the Skank for Brains split album on vinyl [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] so I chose to play some tracks from the original Beach Records release. If there is such a thing as a punk ska classic, this album certainly qualifies. The Rudiments and The Suicide Machines (known then as Jack Kevorkian and the Suicide Machines) recorded some of these songs for later releases but the rawness and energy of these original recordings is still a lot of fun to hear after all these years. I included the intro, intermission and end announcements on the original CD release, as well as couple tracks from Link 80 and Nothing Cool that were tacked on to the end of the album.
When I say “new ska”, I am typically referring to brand new release from still active bands (like the Less Than Jake track I included this episode) or bands that are new to me, typically highlighting releases from the last 4 years or so. That’s the general definition I’m going with moving forward.
The Rudiments [http://www.myspace.com/therudiments]– “Wailing Paddle”, “Sunday Morning Suspect” – from the Skank for Brains [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] album
I talked about The Rudiments last week. Very underrated.
The Suicide Machines [http://suicide-machines.com/] – “New Girl”, “Green World” – from the Skank for Brains [http://www.asbestosrecords.bigcartel.com/product/rudiments-jack-kevorkian-the-suicide-machines-skank-for-brains-2xlp] album
Detroit based ska punk band who existed for 15 years.
Link 80 [http://linkeighty.com/] – “Hey! What’s That Noise?”, “Time Won’t Heal the Pain” – the Skank for Brains [http://www.amazon.com/Skank-Brains-Rudiments/dp/B000000GYU] album
As far as I can tell, neither of these songs were released on any subsequent Link 80 albums. Enjoy!
Nothing Cool [http://www.myspace.com/nothingcool] – “My Life” – from the Skank for Brains album
Nothing Cool was (and is) more of a pop punk outfit but do a catchy punk ska version on this Billy Joel cover.
Less Than Jake [http://www.lessthanjake.com/] – “Life Led Out Loud” – from the Greetings from Less Than Jake [http://lessthanjake.limitedpressing.com/products/11032] EP
New release from LTJ as they play with the Warped Tour this summer
Urkel and The Winslows [http://www.urkelandthewinslows.com/fr_home.cfm] – “Murphy’s Law” – demo track [http://www.urkelandthewinslowsgiveaways.com/]
Ska/Reggae/Rock from Brooklyn. Formed in October 2009, the band plans to have a full album out this fall.
Shortstop From Tokyo [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Shortstop-From-Tokyo/6213789946] – “Aged to Delusion” – from the Suck On This! [http://shortstopfromtokyomusic.bandcamp.com/] EP
Third Wave style ska rock from Chicago.
Murphy’s Kids [http://murphyskids.com/] – “I Still Miss You Alex Levine” – from the Departures [http://www.communityrecords.org/?page_id=3&category=31&product_id=59] album
Band from Richmond, VA who have seemed to merge into the DC ska scene. Good poppy punk ska.
The Sidewalks [http://www.facebook.com/thesidewalks] – “Ready, Set, Go!” – from the Better Late Than Never [http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/better-late-than-never/id335434042] album
More Third Wave style ska from PEI, Canada. The band played a farewell show on August 4th but still have one last album coming out before the end of the year.
Tip the Van [http://www.tipthevan.com/] – “Place Like Home” – from the Passion, Love and Pride [http://tipthevan.storenvy.com/products/37457-passion-love-pride-ep] EP
I didn’t plan it this way but this is another band that just split up. Tip the Van announced that they are on “indefinite hiatus” earlier this week. A sad development as bands that feature sweet female harmonies are few and far between.
The Brass Action [http://www.facebook.com/theBrassAction?sk=app_178091127385] – “Handyman” – random track from Facebook [http://www.facebook.com/theBrassAction?sk=app_178091127385] (?)
Big brassy ska from Vancouver, BC.
Royal City Riot [http://www.facebook.com/royalcityriot]– “I Should’ve Known Better” – from the Coast to Coast [http://www.megalithrecords.com/store/product_info.php/cPath/21/products_id/402?osCsid=731d98d168039919d9874b6956f6bc0a] album
Ska from Long Island, NY.
Green Room Rockers [http://www.greenroomrockers.com/] – “Bring It On Home To Me” – from the Green Room Rockers [http://greenroomrockers.com/wordpress/?page_id=53] album
Indiana’s soul ska kings bring the soul in a big way on this Sam Cooke cover.
Bigger Thomas [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bigger-Thomas/42216803467] – “Radics & Roger A Chat” – from the Steal My Sound [http://biggerthomas1.bandcamp.com/album/steal-my-sound] album
New Jersey’s Bigger Thomas has been around for 23 years now and released their latest album digitally at the end of last year. Their bassist writes the excellent ska blog, Marco on the Bass.
Bobby Pins & The Saloon Soldiers [http://www.myspace.com/bobbypinsandthesaloonsoldiers] – “The Revenge” – from the Bobby Pins & The Saloon Soldiers [http://jumpuprecords.com/blog/?p=1181]album
A trio of female singers backed by early reggae beats from Dresden, Germany. And somehow, it all works out.
The Fundamentals [http://www.thefundamentals.ca/] – “Leaving Me Behind” – from the Leaving Me Behind [http://thefundamentals.bandcamp.com/] EP
Sweet, sweet Canadian ska from Montreal. Their latest EP is really, really good.
