Episode 8: Antiracist Discussion, Session 3

In this antiracist discussion series episode, our guest, Yahya Sultan, discusses the intersectionality of colorism within racism and how fair skin is valued within the South Asian community and in communities of people of color, how colorism affects women more than men, the colonial rule of India/Pakistan and its influence on colorism, and the generational trauma caused by this. Yahya also discusses peoples’ perspectives on colorism within race and how that impacts the way young people view themselves. In this episode, we have a segment featuring student perspectives, where two college students talk on their experiences with racism in their schooling, and the challenges they are facing in attending college as students of color, and their thoughts on what schools/colleges should do moving forward to be anti-racist.

Episode 7: Antiracist Discussion, Session 2

In this special antiracist discussion series episode, our guest today is Dr. Leslie Wilson, who is the associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University, and professor of American history, who teaches American, African American and African history. Dr. Wilson will address how America is one of the most racist nations in the world because we are open deniers of the truth and how the length of American history is filled with degrees of racist behavior.  When we teach, we tend to stick to one aspect of racism or we shift around to various topics. However, that is not how racism works. It is always interconnected to other groups and never isolated to one group for the course of time. Dr. Wilson also provides us with tools on how to become antiracist in a society where being racist is the much easier choice.
