We Were Never Meant to Know All of This: Nervous System Overload in the Digital Age

Our nervous systems were never built for this. And I mean that very literally. The human nervous system evolved to handle the concerns of a small community, a local environment, the people and situations directly in front of you. Not every tragedy happening simultaneously everywhere in the world, delivered to your pocket all hours of the day with no off switch. In this episode I talk about what actually happens to your nervous system when the threat never resolves... why "activated" becomes your baseline without you even noticing... and why a parent who's been consuming heavy content all day brings that energy into the room whether they say a word about it or not. I also get into how my kids and I actually navigate this in real life...why we deleted YouTube Kids when they were little (the creepiest stuff was absolutely targeted at children), why we play Roblox together and what conversations we have around it, how I've watched their behavior shift after too much screen time, and how giving them language for what they're feeling in their bodies after certain content has changed how they self-regulate. This isn't about locking everything down. It's about the difference between being informed and being overwhelmed. And right now, a lot of what we're calling "staying informed" is actually nervous system overload dressed up as awareness. Your assignment this week: audit your consumption. Notice the ratio of activation to settling in your day. Create one genuine tech-free window. And start having the conversation with your kids instead of letting them absorb it all passively. Come talk about this in the Balanced Nest community on Skool. Comment CONNECT and I'll send you the link. Your family is worth the work.

episode Power Struggles Are a Control Problem (Not a Kid Problem) artwork

Power Struggles Are a Control Problem (Not a Kid Problem)

Why does everything turn into a power struggle? Why does your kid fight you on things that seem so small? Why does she refuse to do something she genuinely loves the second you ask her to do it? It's not defiance. It's control...or rather, the lack of it. In this episode I share a story about a girl who refused to ride her horse after a summer of back-to-back activities, and why from the outside it looked like defiance but from the inside it was the only thing in her day she actually got to decide. I talk about why kids today are more overscheduled and under-autonomied than any generation before them, what the nervous system actually needs to develop a healthy sense of self, and why power struggles are really just information about where agency has gone missing. I also share exactly how we run weekly planning meetings in our house with Josie (13) and Izzy (10), how Human Design shapes the kind of autonomy each of them needs, and the one thing you can try this week that will noticeably shift your family's dynamic. Plus the Rose, Bud and Thorn check-in we do at dinner — and why Josie walked out the door this morning with a list of business ideas for me. episode Why Does Everything Turn Into a Fight? The Nervous System Timing Problem artwork

Why Does Everything Turn Into a Fight? The Nervous System Timing Problem

Have you ever said the exact same thing, in what felt like the exact same tone, and gotten a completely different reaction? One day it lands fine. The next day everything explodes. For a long time Anna Marie thought she was the problem — that if she could just find the right words, the right script, the right approach, the fighting would stop. Turns out it was never about the words. It was about timing — and more specifically, about the state of everyone's nervous system before the conversation even started. In this episode Anna Marie breaks down: •  The window of tolerance — what it is and why it explains the door explosion •  Why a neutral question can feel like an attack when someone’s nervous system is already full •  What actually happens in the brain when you’re maxed out (the prefrontal cortex goes offline) •  The one sentence that tables a hard conversation without abandoning it •  Why nothing is unrelated when it comes to the body — your nervous system is still holding the finance argument while you’re talking about dinner •  How to build intentional transition windows into your family’s daily rhythm so conversations actually land She also shares what she does in her own house — including why Josie gets 15 minutes in a dark room after band before anyone asks her anything — and the practical assignment she’s giving every listener this week. The success or failure of a conversation is determined before anyone opens their mouth. Once you see that, you stop taking the explosion personally — and you start being able to actually change it. episode Why Does Everything Need a Label? The Science of Diagnosing The Normal Human Experience artwork

Why Does Everything Need a Label? The Science of Diagnosing The Normal Human Experience

We love a label. A diagnosis. A framework. A type. And honestly, the relief when something finally has a name is real. But here's the question: what happens when the name becomes the thing? When the label stops being a tool and starts being the whole story? In this episode I get into the actual neuroscience of why our brains are wired to categorize (hint: it activates the reward center, there's a literal neurological hit every time you go "oh that's just my anxious attachment style"). I talk about how the clinical definitions of mental health disorders have expanded to the point where normal human emotional responses are getting classified as pathology, and what that's doing to us. I also share my own experience getting brain scans at the Amen Clinic, what my ADHD diagnosis actually did and didn't do for me, and where the line is between a framework that opens a door and one that quietly becomes a cage. Plus: what the research says about minimal labeling, why the nervous system heals by being witnessed not categorized, and four concrete things you can do this week to hold your frameworks more loosely. A map is only useful when it helps you navigate. It stops being useful the moment it replaces your direct experience with a theory about your direct experience. episode Why I Don't Do Talk Therapy (And What I Do Instead) artwork

Why I Don't Do Talk Therapy (And What I Do Instead)

This one might ruffle some feathers. I don't do talk therapy. I'm not a fan of it. I don't think it works well for most people and I definitely don't think it gets to the root of most things — and I say that after years of doing it myself and years of working with clients who came to me after exhausting it. Here's my issue: you can talk about a wound forever. You can understand exactly where it came from, what it connected to, how it shaped you. You can have profound insight into your own psychology — and still react the same way in trigger moments. Still feel the same way. Still not be able to change it. Insight lives in your head. The pattern lives in your body. And until you give the body a different experience, until that stuck energy actually moves, the pattern stays. In this episode I break down why I think talk therapy hits a ceiling, what stagnant energy actually is (and why I'm still a skeptic who can't fully explain it), how I work intuitively across multiple modalities, and why the people who find their way to this work are usually the ones who already know something else is possible. I also talk about how your own energetic work directly affects your kids — because they're always feeling the state of your nervous system, whether you're aware of it or not.
