My 2025 Top Reads

This year I didn’t read or listen to nearly as many books as normally. I spent a lot of time consuming podcasts in this year as well as numerous documentaries. I found it difficult to find interesting stories and content and I’m not sure whether I’m simply holding so much of the titles I come across to a higher standard based on my reading past, or the quality is just trash recently. Either way, I have consumed some books that were of interest and outside of the realm of fitness, health and coaching this year. This year I will also do something different and release my top podcasts and podcast episodes, as well as my top documentaries and learning videos that I watched or listened to. Here’s the list of books that I discussed in the accompanying video. Imago & Adulthood Rights by Octavia E. Butler The Fiat Standard by Saifedean Ammous The Far Reaches Collection by various authors Debt by David Graeber Life of Pi by Yann Martel This is a public episode. Instant "Amazon Now" Culture Sabotaging Your Fitness & Health?

As someone quickly approaching 50, with less than 2 years to go, I’ve had the opportunity to live through two sides of the average lifespan experience. I’m old enough to remember a time where Captain Kirk was the only one with a smart phone, people had to find a pay phone to make a call, and if your spouse was at work during the day, you didn’t contact them unless it was VERY important. Now we’ve gone from emails to text messages with read receipts and people’s expectations are that when they send you a message to interrupt your thought process, workday or whatever, they will get an immediate response. We now feel obligated to reply immediately and if we don’t we are then held accountable at home. And what has become so much more important to be discussed over text in today’s age that wasn’t that important during the days of my parents and grandparents? We didn’t have internet as an actual thing at home until I was nearly out of high school. When I was in college we used to set the computer to download an audio file overnight because it took so long to download. It took hours in some cases, and sometimes days to get what we wanted. We went from taking hours on a desktop computer at home to downloading entire albums, films and more in just seconds on a mobile device. We now order things that can be shipped to us same day. The culture of instantaneous replies and immediate delivery, coupled with the shortening of songs to under 2 and half minutes, videos to 3 to 6 seconds has driven attention spans to nearly zero. The health and fitness space has not been immune to this. As a matter of fact, it’s probably been one of the forefathers and pioneers of the quick and instant fad. The shortened attention span of society, coupled with the instant gratification of Amazon Now behavior makes it so hard for people to grasp that Training Adaptation takes time. Time under tension is how our body’s tissues adapt and “Force is the language of cells”. Most of us rarely speak to our muscle cells in the language they love long enough to create the adaptations we need to tissue. We expect change, but don’t realize that most human beings have been so detached from their body/mind for so long that their nervous system doesn’t know how to effectively coordinate the messages being received. Your new client or anyone new to training stands to gain more from starting at the very basics of joint health and #Mobility before adding the load of complex movement and man made exercises, but… We are in a culture of fast, fast, I want it all now. So this message is often lost in the noise of Beach Body, High Intensity, Fat Loss, Barry’s, Orange Theory, Muscle & Fitness magazine madness. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It took you years for your body to be what it is on the day you finally decided to make a change. Walking into the forest for years and expecting to walk out in a few days is a wild expectation. And often times when we start training, our mind is ready to write checks that our body can’t afford to cash. We want to do the big things right now. This is how most people find themselves hurt, in physical therapy and having setbacks shortly after beginning. Don’t get me wrong though… Starting is better than not starting. And I’m not trying to scare anyone away from getting started. But it’s important that we have a sensible, and sustainable approach and it’s important that as a consumer you come to this space more informed about where you and your body currently are at. This is why an assessment is the very first thing that you should do. Even if you don’t plan to work with someone for a long time, connecting with a coach who can give you an idea of your baseline of joint function, for example, can have massive benefits. An assessment is a means of establishing a point A. With point A, we understand where your body is in the wilderness. From there we can map out a path towards point B. You can’t plot a path to point B if you don’t even know where your point A is. Getting to point B is not always direct either. There will be rough patches, setbacks and things to overcome. And point B isn’t the end of the journey either. There will always be somewhere to go next. Training and improving your body is a journey that has only one endpoint. So as you embark on your journey to undertake your goals, remember to establish point A. Not sure how to do that? Hit me up… Move Better, Feel Better, Do More! is a reader-supported publication. My Top Reads of 2024

Every year I release my top reads from the previous year. This year I’m using the video feature to discuss all of the books that I thought you might find useful going forwards. All of these titles have played some role in influencing my perspective and helping me become more articulate in life. I think that your reading list should provide you with breadth of knowledge and expose you to new ways of thinking. If you are not challenging yourself to learn and grow then you are simply becoming weaker mentally. Much like strength training, if you aren’t loading your muscles and providing them with the forces required to challenge them then you are slowly becoming physically weak. These titles are not only important social titles, but they are thought provoking. Give this post a like if you found it useful and leave me a comment to let me know some books you’ve read and recommend reading. Move Better, Feel Better, Do More! is a reader-supported publication. Any proceeds are used to support my family directly. If you’d like to support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. This is a public episode. episode Man At The Garden: You Deserve It All artwork

Man At The Garden: You Deserve It All

“It is better to be a warrior in a garden than to be a gardener in a war.” - Miyamoto Musashi “I deserve it all” is repeated like an affirmation in the chorus of Kendrick Lamar’s newly released song “Man At The Garden”. In this chorus it seems as though he is not only reminding himself of being deserving of the things he has in life, but also reminding us all that we are deserving. But what is this “all” that we deserve? I was left pondering this and thinking that is it the material things? Is it the pain and suffering? Is it the joy and happiness? Is it the sorror and grief? What is this “all” that we deserve? Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen for bad people. Things happen. We get injured for seemingly no reason at all. We gain two new clients. We loose three clients shortly after. A CEO is shot down in the streets of New York. Thousands of people across the country die and suffer because they cannot get the coverage that they paid for, from his company and others like his, because they put profits over people. Our back hurts when we run or golf. Our shoulder hurts when we play pickleball. Some of our children grow up, get married, have children, give us grandchildren and live a long life. Others have their life cut short from school shootings, stray gunfire on the streets, or US bombs dropped by Israelis on their homes during a genocide. I just found out this morning that the grandfather, Khaled Nabhan, who became grandfather to so many after losing his granddaughter Reem last year to Israeli bombardment has fallen victim to the continuing genocide. He referred to Reem as the “Soul of his soul” as she was the daughter of his daughter. And as I write this another school shooting has happened this morning in America. Do we deserve any of this? What is this “ALL” that we deserve? Move Better, Feel Better, Do More! is a reader-supported publication. To support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. There are some real bops on this album, but I think the reason that I keep coming back to Man in The Garden is the same reason I often found myself returning to his song “Father Time” from the album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. My soul seeks to comprehend the artistic overlaps of life and science, and my mind craves expansive thought provocation. I had written an essay in July about cultivating and nurturing growth through gardening. It seems no coincidence that this theme would find itself in front of me again, especially as over the last few days I’ve had conversations with new clients about cultivating an environment along with the work and time that it demands of us. I don’t believe in coincidences. I am reminded of something a colleague said to me years ago. He said that he believed there’s like a cloud of ideas surrounding us and that many of us are open to ideas. Some of us choose to take those ideas and give them to the world, freeing us as a conduit to accept more and disperse more. Those of us who operate from this space of abundance expand our capacity to receive more. Others of us choose to hoard and hold onto ideas trying to keep them all to ourselves. We think that we must hold onto them, hide them and operate from a place of scarcity. This is what we’re taught. This all feeds into the ways in which we approach not only our lives, but our training, our coaching and more. But at what point did some of us begin to operate so deeply from a position of scarcity, constraints and limitations? We are born into a world of abundance. As babies we have endless potential for movement, growth and learning. At some point we reach peaks and then begin the process of slowly or rapidly dying. Our movement constraints begin as soon as we decide we no longer sit and play on the floor and would rather sit on a sofa or chair at the television, computer, classroom, etc. Our minds begin the process of being constrained as those who have come before us teach us “the way” things are done. You’re not supposed to do it that way. We’ve always done it this way. Not all traditions and norms are beneficial to humanity’s growth and longevity individually or as a species. At some point, many of us even stop learning new things. Man At The Garden sends me back to a line that Kendrick Lamar says in the beginning of the song Euphoria: “I ain't thinkin' about no reaper*****, I'm reapin' what I sow, okay” This sets up Man At The Garden as a song title and continued thought because it tells us the thought process. We reap what it is we sow. We cannot stop the things we perceive to be “bad” from happening. All we can do is nurture the type of environment that enhances potential for positive outcomes while helping mitigate potential negative ones. I knew I had gophers in my yard in the past. So placing gopher wire in certain places, protecting newly planted trees with gopher baskets, placing lots of flowers and plants they don’t like and placing my vegetables in raised beds were basic mitigation steps. For these reasons I have less gopher issues. I deserve all the things that came with doing the work to cultivate this better outcome. If your garden is your body then what steps are you taking to nurture the potential for better outcomes? Do you strength train to increase and maintain muscle tissue and bone density? Do you do aerobic exercise to improve cardiovascular function? Do you do high intensity exercise to improve maximal capacity? Do you do targeted and specific mobility work to address blindspots in your training and activity that can lead to pain and discomforts? In the end, nothing that we do happens overnight. Nothing will ever be made perfect. There will be ups and downs throughout our lives and we’ll face many challenges. I’ve been on a journey this past year that has presented me with no shortage of challenges. From losing my father, to finding out that we’d have another child to nurture, grow and attempt to successfully navigate towards independence, it’s been a year with no shortage of ups and downs. We have to remember that our gardens are never complete. It takes time, energy and resources to amend. There will always be more work to do and something to attend to. We are fooling ourselves if we think there will ever be a day where we can finally sit and rest without continuing to do all the little things to maintain. We’re also delusional if we believe there’ll ever be a point of perfection. There’s no such thing as “pain free” in life. We can only control what we can and we must do the work within our gardens to lessen the impacts of unexpected changes in weather, effects of time and forces we have little control over. So grab your shovel and get to work. Thanks for reading Move Better, Feel Better, Do More!! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. Build-U Podcast Episode 3: Sales, Marketing & Your Brand

In this episode I give my background and experience with two things that most personal trainers don't consider when starting a new business. Those two things are Marketing and Your Brand! Sales has never been my strong suit and I’ve always hated salesmen. It always felt like people wanted to use tricks and gimmicks just to get a sale. But I’ve always felt that if I’m selling something, that I don’t want to oversell and under-deliver. I want people to buy and not have remorse after the fact. This is one of the reasons I never worked big box gyms. All they care about is the bottom line. They don’t care about actually helping the client. So for me I had to identify what I needed to do differently so that I was no longer selling. I realized that since I work with a person one on one, that at the end of the day the client is buying my knowledge, expertise and the person I am. So for me, I think that givers gain is the golden rule. The more you give, the more you gain in the end. If you approach things from a scarcity mindset then it’s most likely you don’t have enough to give. I’ve got over 20 years of experience and I can’t distill that over the course of a session or two. I can give you a ton of things to put into play immediately within my 30 minute consult sessions or even a paid assessment. Move Better, Feel Better, Do More! is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a paid subscriber. If a person values you as a person and realizes that you aren’t holding out on them then they are more likely to trust you. At the end of the day it’s about trust. I don’t want to work with anyone who I feel is teasing and stringing me along. So I let people know up front, that my training is not only about training, but about education. We will take things slowly and progressively. You can’t do Calculus if you don’t know basic arithmetic. If you learn with me then you’ll have a better foundation and build a more robust training program. With the tools you gain from working with me, your perspective and approach will forever be changed. I hope this short episode gives some insights to my approach. Please leave your feedback and let me know what types of episodes you’d like to see in the future. Thanks for reading Move Better, Feel Better, Do More!! This post is public so feel free to share it.
