About The Business Of Making Art

See what it takes to be successful in Atlantic Canada I’m on a mission to inspire Atlantic Canadians to do what they love and to love what they do. My show is about Atlantic Canadians who work toward something that is hard to achieve. Or, is it? The people I talk to tend to seem like they enjoy their work. This phenomenon fascinates me, and I want to learn from these discussions. It stands to reason that you’ll learn something from them too. Who knows? Maybe these discussions will inspire you to do something you love... whatever that looks like for you. More about me at glennfriel.com.

Encouraging Views From The 902 | The Business Of Making Art | Episode 005

Encouragement. You don't find that very often on YouTube and podcasts. I don't care if nobody watches or listens to my stuff. I believe this kind of talk is what the world needs, and I'm going to keep making it. #atlanticcanada [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/atlanticcanada] #radioshow [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/radioshow] #moderndance [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/moderndance] #entrepreneurship [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/entrepreneurship] #objective [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/objective] Atlantic Canada has an excellent arts scene. From dance and performing arts to writing and music, the scene is quite diversified... and full of talent. We'll talk about the Atlantic Canadian arts scene, and I'll tell the story of how I got into interpretive dance. In this fifth episode of The Business Of Making Art, I sit down with a pair of Atlantic Canadian artists to find out everything I can for my own journey... and yours. Marcus Grover hosts his own radio show, Views From The 902, for four years now, and I've got a lot to learn from him. Today, he guest hosts my show, and it's his first time hosting on camera. His twin brother Jerramy is a natural at conversation, especially at his young age of just 20 years old. He's just stepping into the career phase of his life, and in my opinion, whoever ends up hiring this guy is getting a steal. These are some impressive Atlantic Canadian Young people. Look out for these two in the future... and you can be sure they'll be back on this show very soon! More on me and my material at glennfriel.com

#atlanticcanada [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/atlanticcanada] #chainmaille [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/chainmaille] #jewelrymaking [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/jewelrymaking] Elisaveta Wynters, known across Atlantic Canada as Veda, is talented at everything she does because she never stops making her art. #witches [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/witches] #geeks [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/geeknews] #entrepreneurship [https://www.youtube.com/hashtag/entrepreneurship] In this fourth episode of The Business Of Making Art, I sit down with an Atlantic Canadian artist to find out everything I can for my own journey... and yours. Veda knows the East Coast craft and market scene, and her competition is stiff. During our talk, I get an idea of what it will take to make a career as an artist and entrepreneur in my home of Atlantic Canada. Veda makes jewelry, chainmaille, clothes, and a range of other items with a gothic-style theme. Her work appeals to witches and geeks, but as she says, her pieces are loaded with love and energy, so her clientele seem to have a wide diversity of tastes and interests. Veda is awesome, and I hope you learn as much from her as I did. More on me and my material at glennfriel.com

EPISODE 3 - El Jones - The Epitome of Relentlessness

This is the 3rd episode of my new show, The Business of Making Art. In this episode, El Jones and I discuss what it takes to embark on a career involving art, advocacy, journalism or literally anything that is hard to achieve. El discusses her approach to the blank page. We talk about what the process of being an artist and the process of being an advocate have in common. It is my hope that our conversation will inspire you start something of your own, whether you want to transition into a new career or take on some exciting work on the side of what you already do. Her book, Abolitionist Intimacies, can be ordered directly from her publisher, fernwoodpublishing.ca. For more about me and my material, go to glennfriel.com.

EPISODE 2 - The Grover Twins - East Coast Youth on the Move

The Business Of Making Art - Episode 2 This week’s guests are Marcus Grover and Jerramy Grover. These young twins are excellent examples of young people from the East Coast who are taking their careers and their lives seriously.  Marcus hosts a weekly radio show for Atlantic Canada and beyond. He’s in his third year of a journalism degree with his sights fixed on a future career in broadcasting. His show, Views Of The 902, runs on Monday nights from 9-10 p.m. in Atlantic Time. To listen to his show and all the great shows put together by Atlantic Canadian volunteers, go to communityradio.ca [http://communityradio.ca/].  Jerramy also works on the show, but he has his sights set on a future career in business. He just completed a Business Administration diploma, and while he takes some time to weigh his options, he’s keeping busy working a lot of hours in retail and helping his brother with the radio show. He knows quite a bit about sports, so I’m hoping to see him working in a sports organization here in Atlantic Canada at some point. In this episode, we talk about women in professional sports, journalism, the East Coast arts scene, and our adventures in Montreal.  — See what it takes to be successful in Atlantic Canada. I’m on a mission to inspire Atlantic Canadians to do what they love and to love what they do. I do it because I wish there was something like this that I could have listened to when I was figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.  My show is about Atlantic Canadians who work toward something that is hard to achieve. Or, is it? The people I talk to tend to seem like they enjoy their work. This phenomenon fascinates me, and I want to learn from these discussions. It stands to reason that you’ll learn something from them too. Who knows? Maybe these discussions will inspire you to do something you love… whatever that looks like for you. Take care.  For more about me, and for all of my material… podcast, videos, blog… it’s all there, at glennfriel.com [https://glennfriel.com/].

EPISODE 1 – Max Medyk - On a Mission to Attract Talented People to Canada

The Business Of Making Art – Episode 1 This week’s guest is Max Medyk, founder and CEO of I’m Canada Media, based in Halifax, Atlantic Canada. To put it simply, Max helps immigrants and international students move to Canada. I ask Max about his practice, the sacrifices he made to get established, and how he works with new Canadians across the country. Max is an excellent example of someone who knows what it takes to work toward a goal. I’m Canada [https://www.imcanada.media/] is the biggest online community of international students in the country.
