The Canadian Returnee Podcast
American and Canadian cops just wrapped up something called Operation Hard Ball. We’re talking 37 people charged, over 1,000 kilos of cocaine seized, and a direct line drawn to one of the most explosive stories in recent Canadian history: the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. [https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/organized-crime-groups-india-based-arrest-charges-us-canada-response-sikh-groups-9.7262239] Three crime groups, one massive network. The FBI, RCMP, LAPD, and border officials went after three interconnected Indian-based crime syndicates, including the Lawrence Bishnoi group, which Canada already labelled a terrorist entity back in September. The Nijjar connection. Investigators say Bishnoi and his lieutenant, Goldy Brar, ordered the 2023 assassination of Nijjar outside a Surrey gurdwara. [https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/article/gangster-bishnoi-charged-with-ordering-nijjar-hit-in-bc-as-us-announces-arrests/] The RCMP says this investigation found no evidence linking the Indian government to it. That’s a big deal for Canada-India relations, which have been icy since the killing. Extortion with a chilling playbook. Victims, including a B.C. immigration consultant hit up for $500,000, got threats disguised as everyday messages, like being told: “it’s your turn to file your taxes.” A border insider. Prosecutors say someone inside the Canada Border Services Agency was feeding tips to smugglers about when and where border checks were happening. Of the people charged, 24 are in custody, but 10 fugitives are still out there, split between the US, India, and Europe. This could actually help thaw things out between Ottawa and New Delhi, especially with trade talks and a possible Modi visit to Canada now on the table under Mark Carney.
