Today, I’m sitting down with Sean Miller, a former professor of literature whoexplores the ways in which childhood trauma hold us back (even when we feel relatively accomplished in life). Today, we discuss the intricatedynamics of self-parenting while simultaneously raising children, examining the ways in which we model our own parenting style based on how we were raised, for better or for worse, and how we can cultivate deeper empathy towards the small human beings we love, bridging that perpetual generational gap that we so easily forget we too once treaded. No one argues that, from toddler to teenagers, emotional regulation- or rather dysregulation- is a challenge, but how often do we consider our own, and how its affects revibrates across our parent-child relationships? How do we walk that tightrope of validating our children’sfeelings while still setting appropriate boundaries of behaviour, avoiding shutting them down with classic adages like ‘life isn’t fair’?
