About The Disability Tangent

All things Disability.  Many things not.  Join us to learn, to vent, to network, to find out about cool people doing cool advocacy work, and a whole lot of other stuff.  We laugh, curse, cry and generally carry on about the policies, procedures, and people standing in our way.  But mostly we celebrate all the joy and love and beauty that is found in this amazing community, and share all of that with you.  So jump in.  Join the journey to better access and inclusion. We are just starting out on this fabulous trip and you are welcome to share the ride. Support us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/c/TheDisabilityTangentPodcast

E16 Hot Take: Autism Cares Act (A Really Sad Iteration of Batman)

Welcome to our first Hot Take! A short, sweet, saucy 30-minute rough cut of Rocco and Christy talking about current events that intersect with disability identity. This time, it is the Autism CARES Act that was signed into law in the USA and puts $2 billion in funding in the hands of autistic people ... or does it? Listen in for more! E15 The Disability Tangent Inclusive Holiday Extravaganza with Special Guest Nicholas Aether (Hallelujah ... Or Maybe Something Else)

Yuletide, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa... whatever you celebrate, we hope you will celebrate it with us! We have assembled an amazing group of the disability community to share the season with you, starting with Nicholas Aether, our esteemed guest, and a snippet of what will be a much longer interview in the coming year. We also have Rocco and Christy sharing holiday memories and made-up holidays of the present day and reflections from Suzannah Weiss, Robin Arnall, and Isaac Harvey MBE! What a lineup! It isn't all joy, as we note some of the challenges we face at the holidays and how we need to address them. Disabilities don't take vacations, and they can be even more affecting for some in this season, so we acknowledge the many difficulties that the season can bring and honor all sorts of experiences. We at The Disability Tangent are so grateful for all this year has brought and look forward to the amazing things coming for us in 2025. We thank you and hope you will continue to join us on this journey in the New Year! Happy Holidays! E14 Isaac Harvey MBE (Doing What It Takes To Get Sworded)

Don't let the laughter fool you. We are serious about bringing on Isaac Harvey MBE as a part of the Disability Tangent team! We may break down in tears from the joy we are experiencing in this conversation, but we also discuss the many adventures of Isaac, including his work as a content creator and video editor, his recent trip from Brighton to Paris with Wheels and Wheelchairs, and his upcoming plans for the LA Paralympics, which are admittedly not fully formed. But there's still time to create a plan for 2028. We have confidence he will be there and we will all be laughing in sunny California together. It is a lighthearted conversation, but Isaac is a force in the disability advocacy space, and we are thrilled to be chatting with him about so much on this episode! We dare you to watch it without cracking a smile. Let us know if you can. We will be amazed at your stoicism! E12 Fixing or Finding Authenticity in Disability (You Don’t Want to Sound Like Hillary Clinton)

Another Tangent hits the airwaves and this time Rocco and Christy are talking about "Fixing". What is it? What does it mean in the context of disability? How do we keep from making disabled people feel wrong, or broken? And what helps us find authentic, empowering community? Jump in to this topic with us as we stumble upon some wisdom--and a little chaos, and a little laughter, and a little weirdness. We look at some models of disability, some ways to address access needs, and some personal stories that tie in to it all.
