S1 Ep 17: The Car Journey Home - Supporting Your Child After an Audition or Show

In this solo episode of The Drama Coach Podcast, I’m talking about something that can feel small, but really matters for young performers: The car journey home. After an audition, a show, a self-tape, a festival or a drama class, children are often full of adrenaline, nerves, excitement or disappointment. As parents and carers, it’s natural to want to ask questions, offer feedback, or work out how it went - but sometimes what they really need first is a soft landing. This episode explores how we can support young performers after auditions and performances without adding unnecessary pressure. I talk about: How to avoid turning the car journey home into an instant debrief Why effort matters more than outcome What to say when your child is disappointed Why instant corrections aren’t always helpful How to praise specifically without comparing Why your calm can become their calm Simple phrases to keep in your back pocket after auditions and shows This isn’t about telling anyone how to parent. Every child and family is different. It’s simply advice to take, leave or adapt, based on my experience as a drama coach, actor, chaperone and mum. A gentle, practical episode for parents and carers supporting young performers through auditions, shows and training. You can find me across social media at @TheDramaCoach. We’re Sponsored by SceneTribe

In this short bonus episode, I’m sharing a proud announcement: The Drama Coach Podcast is now sponsored by SceneTribe. Before the Season 2 sponsored episodes begin, I wanted to take a moment to explain why SceneTribe feels like such a natural fit for the podcast and everything I’m trying to build here: More clarity, more confidence, more honesty and more useful conversations for young performers, parents and creatives. SceneTribe is a new professional platform for the creative industries, built around the idea that creative careers are shaped by the work we do, the people we work with and the collaborations that help us grow. In this episode, I talk about why that matters, especially in an industry that can often feel confusing, closed-off or difficult to navigate. In this episode: * Why The Drama Coach Podcast is now sponsored by SceneTribe * Why SceneTribe feels so aligned with the values of the podcast * The importance of craft, collaboration and trust in creative careers * Why creative people often do not fit neatly into one box * How SceneTribe supports visibility across the wider creative industries * Why parents and young performers should understand the bigger picture of the industry * SceneTribe’s plans for managed under-18 profiles in the very near future SceneTribe is currently for adults working in the creative industries, with plans for managed under-18 profiles coming very soon! S1 Ep16: Rejection in Acting - How to Handle It and Move Forward

In this episode, I’m joined by Rebecca Rendic - an actor and filmmaker who shares thoughtful, honest content about the realities of the industry. We talk about rejection - something every actor faces, but rarely talks about in a real and practical way. This is a grounded, open conversation about what rejection actually feels like, how it changes over time, and how to begin reframing it so it doesn’t knock your confidence or sense of self. We also explore how social media adds another layer to it all, and what can genuinely help in those moments when you don’t get the role - or hear nothing at all. We cover: * What rejection really feels like (and why it’s not always immediate) * How to start reframing rejection in a healthier way * The gap between effort and outcome in acting * Social media, comparison and feeling “behind” * Practical tools to handle rejection in the moment * Building an identity beyond acting * What young performers need to hear * How parents can support without adding pressure This episode is for young performers, parents, and anyone navigating the emotional side of the industry. S1 Ep15: Could Your Child Do Voice Acting?

In this episode, I’m exploring the world of voice acting - what it actually is, how people get started, and whether it’s something worth exploring for young performers. When people think of voice acting, they often picture cartoons and character voices - but the reality is much broader than that. From audiobooks and narration to online content and commercials, voice work is an area of the industry that many actors begin to explore as they get older. I talk about: * What voice acting really involves * The difference between character work and more natural voiceover styles * Why voice work is often more realistic for older teens than younger children * Platforms like ACX and Mandy * Simple home recording setups and what actually matters * Skills that support strong voice work, including clarity, pacing and truthful communication * How acting techniques - including movement work like Rudolf Laban’s movement efforts - can help actors explore different vocal qualities and character choice I also share a little about my own setup using a USB condenser microphone and Audacity, and why you really don’t need a perfect studio setup to begin learning. This episode is designed as a grounded introduction to voice work for parents and younger performers - and we’ll be exploring the professional side of voice acting in much more depth later on in Series 2. episode S1 Ep14: Training, Craft and Career - What It Really Takes to Be an Actor artwork

S1 Ep14: Training, Craft and Career - What It Really Takes to Be an Actor

In this episode, I’m joined by Robyn Holdaway - an actor with screen experience across Netflix, BBC and AMC, including Sex Education. Robyn brings a really thoughtful and articulate perspective on acting, training and the craft, and this conversation goes deeper than just “tips” - it’s about what it actually takes to build a career in the industry. We talk about training, working professionally on screen, and how acting is both learned and taught - making this a valuable conversation not just for performers, but for those supporting and guiding them. We cover: * The role of training and how it shapes an actor * Moving from training into professional screen work * The importance of clarity, thought and intention in acting * How acting is taught, and what makes training effective * Building a sustainable career, not just booking a job * The reality of the industry vs expectations This is a really insightful conversation for young performers, parents, and drama teachers or coaches supporting actors in their development. And the name of the actor we were trying to think of near the beginning of the episode was Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
