About The Future is Youth

"The Future is Youth" is a podcast for teens and young adults created by CommuniCare Health Centers, a community-based health center in Yolo County. In each episode, we share the voices and stories of people in and around California’s capital city of Sacramento who are investing in healing, celebrating, and empowering youth to shape the future. With topics covering mental health, activism and advocacy work, LGBTQ and racial justice, and bite-size tips on how to find your place in the world. This podcast is investing in the future of connection and community by elevating youth.

The Future is Youth: UC Davis CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources, and Education)

On this episode of "The Future is Youth," we talk to Rachel Henry, Education and Outreach Manager for UC Davis' Center for Advocacy, Resources and Education (CARE). Rachel (she/her) began her advocacy in sexual violence prevention as a peer educator in 2011. It was her years as a peer educator that solidified her love of education and investment in violence prevention. This work also led to her pursuit of bridging gaps between the classroom and lived experiences, which propelled Rachel into her career as a professional cultural humility educator and scholar -practitioner. The UC Davis Center for Advocacy, Resources & Education (CARE), a program within the UC Davis Office of the Provost, is dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of sexual harassment and sexual violence. We provide confidential advocacy, support, and healing services to survivors of sexual harassment and all forms of sexual violence, including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking. We also facilitate prevention programming and professional training, and serve as subject matter experts with regard to victim dynamics, impact of trauma, bystander intervention, and social norm change. Jeanine Gaines (she/her) is a Citizen Potawatomi Nation and communications professional specializing in outreach to unserved and underserved communities. Jeanine has worked on local and state-wide behavior change campaigns, focusing on reducing mental health stigma, suicide prevention and intervention, reducing infant mortality, and increasing human trafficking awareness in tribal communities. The Sacramento Native American Health Center (SNAHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center committed to continue and share the legacy of a healthy American Indian/Alaska Native community based on cultural values delivered through a traditional, innovative and accessible patient-centered health home. On this episode of "The Future is Youth", we talk to an amazing volunteer for NorCal Resist. Vignesh Iyer (he/him/his) is a 21-year-old volunteer with NorCal Resist who primarily works with the legislative, bail/bonds, and accompaniment teams. He started working with NorCal Resist right after George Floyd was murdered by the police in May of 2020. "Protests were taking place all across the nation and I felt a deep sense of urgency to not only take part in those protests but to put his time and energy into organizations that had been doing the work of social justice for a long time," he said.  NorCal Resist is a social justice non-profit based in Sacramento made of community members organizing for a better world with a mission to fight injustice through making a positive impact in our communities.
