GFS Ep. 11 - Athleticism, the role of mobility in your training & competing against the man in the mirror.
In this episode, I sit down with a trainer whom I've known for about 11 years! His name is Jordan Latorre and we first met when I started working at a commercial gym in my home town. When I started getting more serious with my own training around 18-19 years old, I worked with him for a few sessions to tweak my form on the bench press, squat, deadlift and overhead press. To this day, I've remained injury free and I attribute this to the 4 sessions him and I did together about 7 years ago (this is why hiring a trainer is so important!). Jordan found his fitness inspirations by following professional athletes in football and hockey. During our talk, he emphasized the importance of building a good foundation when you start your fitness journey. This means you should nail down the main primal movements (bend, squat, push, pull, twist and lunge) before you start loading them. Jordan also touches on the importance of mobility, and he explained that, "If you're not mobile you can't be stable, which means you can't be strong." Coming from someone who can bench press over 400lbs and deadlift over 600lbs, we might all want to take this advice seriously if we aspire to be as strong as him one day.
Thanks for listening!
