Cheap IT Isn't Cheap: The Real Cost of Lowball MSPs in Houston

Houston businesses often choose low-cost managed IT only to face a single ransomware incident that costs far more than the savings: mature MSPs charge $125–$200 per user/month for full cybersecurity, monitoring, patching and planning, while $90 quotes usually omit critical tools, response capability and skilled staff. In our market a ransomware cleanup runs roughly eight to ten times the annual managed services fee it was meant to avoid. Before signing with an MSP ask about their incident response plan, escalation process and client retention. There are four common provider types - one truck shops, budget reactive MSPs, side‑hustle providers, and mature MSPs - and their differences show up during real incidents. CinchOps delivers transparent pricing, a defined security stack and strategic planning for Houston businesses with 10–250 employees; visit cinchops.com for a real quote. Houston's Cybersecurity Reality Check: Inside the 2026 Verizon DBIR

The 2026 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report just landed - and 96% of ransomware victims were small and mid-sized businesses. If you run a Houston-area company between 20 and 250 employees, this episode is your year-end IT exam. Shane Stevens, CEO of CinchOps, walks through the DBIR findings that actually matter for Houston business owners: * Why ransomware showed up in 48% of all breaches this year * The 43-day patch gap that's costing Houston businesses real money * Why third-party vendor breaches jumped 60% in twelve months * What 47 million unpatched vulnerability instances mean for your network * The MFA gap on cloud admin accounts that 37% of companies still haven't closed * Why the median $139,875 ransom payment costs more than three years of solid managed IT CinchOps serves Houston metro businesses across Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, Richmond, The Woodlands, and the West Houston corridor with managed IT and cybersecurity for organizations with 20 to 250 employees. Houston Under Siege: 8.3 Billion Phishing Attempts and the QR Code Surge

Microsoft tracked 8.3 billion email phishing attempts in Q1 2026; QR code phishing jumped 146% and CAPTCHA-gated attacks more than doubled. The same phishing kits hitting Fortune 500 inboxes are landing in Houston SMB inboxes every day. Shane Stevens warns that business email compromise (BEC) unfolds over multiple conversational emails, not in a single click, so click-only phishing tests miss the majority of attacks. Construction firms, CPA practices, law offices, and wealth managers across Houston have lost six-figure sums to BEC after wire transfers were authorized. Five controls stop most attacks: phishing-resistant MFA (FIDO/passkeys/two-key methods), QR-safe scanning inside email security, conversational BEC training, Microsoft 365 safe links and attachments, and a documented wire-transfer verification process with a 60‑second callback. CinchOps hardens email for Houston SMBs (10–250 employees) - get the full breakdown at cinchops.com.   Read more: 8.3 Billion Phishing Emails: What Q1 2026 Means for Cybersecurity in Houston [https://cinchops.com/what-q1-2026-means-for-cybersecurity-in-houston]   Connect with us: Website link: https://cinchops.com/ [https://cinchops.com/] Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/CinchOps/ [https://www.facebook.com/CinchOps/] LinkedIn link: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cinchops/ [https://www.linkedin.com/company/cinchops/] Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/cinchopsit/ [https://www.instagram.com/cinchopsit/] X: https://x.com/cinchopsit [https://x.com/cinchopsit] YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/@CinchOps [https://www.youtube.com/@CinchOps]   Have Questions? Houston’s $1.6B Grand Parkway Boom — Are Builders Ready?

TxDOT awarded Faroviol a $1.47 billion design-build contract for Grand Parkway Segment B1 (nearly 15 miles) and the $157 million Katy to Cyprus widening moves into construction this summer, creating roughly $1.6 billion in active Grand Parkway work over the next five years. That means many job sites, crews, and devices that all need real-time connectivity. Construction was the third most targeted industry for ransomware in 2025: average ransom demands jumped 15× to $2.33 million and incidents now cause about 24 days of downtime -enough to lose preferred bidder status on long projects. CinchOps, a Katy-based managed IT provider for small and mid-sized construction firms, offers affordable connectivity and security solutions; visit Cinchops.com for a free construction IT review and subscribe to the Houston Tech Brief.   Read more: Construction IT in Houston: The Grand Parkway Segment B-1 Buildout [https://cinchops.com/the-grand-parkway-segment-b-1-buildout]   Connect with us: Website link: https://cinchops.com/ [https://cinchops.com/] Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/CinchOps/ [https://www.facebook.com/CinchOps/] LinkedIn link: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cinchops/ [https://www.linkedin.com/company/cinchops/] Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/cinchopsit/ [https://www.instagram.com/cinchopsit/] X: https://x.com/cinchopsit [https://x.com/cinchopsit] YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/@CinchOps [https://www.youtube.com/@CinchOps]   Have Questions? episode How an AI Read Morse Code—and a Wallet Lost $200,000 artwork

How an AI Read Morse Code—and a Wallet Lost $200,000

Houston businesses are wiring AI agents into invoicing, support, and scheduling so the agents can take real actions -send emails, approve payments, and process refunds. Last week attackers drained about $200,000 from an AI-controlled crypto wallet by posting a Morse code message that the AI translated into a payment instruction; no keys or software were stolen, just an overly helpful assistant acting on untrusted input. The root cause is architectural: prompt injection and excessive permissions. Fixes include limiting agent capabilities, capping spending and approval limits, requiring human sign-off for high-impact actions, treating all uploads and messages as untrusted, and logging every action. CinchOps reviews AI exposure for Houston SMBs (10–250 employees), inventories AI tools, maps authorizations, and implements guardrails to prevent costly mistakes.
