Tony Briffa and Heather Corkhill

TONY BRIFFA AND HEATHER CORKHILL Paul and Cody welcomed Tony Briffa and Heather Corkhill to tonight’s episode of the I in Us. Specifically, on this episode, the development and recent passing of the long-awaited Victorian Government Intersex Protections Bill on 19 February this year, was discussed. TONY BRIFFA Tony has been at the forefront of intersex advocacy for decades, and has appeared on several episodes of The I in Us to share her intersex lived experience and years of advocacy. In fact, her extensive advocacy led to the passing of this groundbreaking piece of Victorian Government legislation.  Further, Tony has sat through every hour of debate, and weathered the storm of opposing views.  Plus, she continued to lobby parliamentarians right up until history was finally made, and the Bill was passed. HEATHER CORKHILL New to The I in Us, Heather Corkhill is a dedicated human rights and anti-discrimination law and policy specialist. Heather has combined qualifications and experience in law, mediation, and film production.  Especially, she is committed to promoting equity, diversity, and human rights for LGBTIQ+ Australians.  Further, Heather has addressed systemic issues through practical and innovative solutions. In recent months, Heather has played a pivotal role in the development of the Missing Voice report.  And she continued the years-long contribution of Equality Australia to the development of the Victorian Government Intersex Protections Bill.  She worked on the final stage immediately before the introduction of the Bill to Parliament, and then supported the passage of the Bill into law. Bonnie and Steph 16 April 2026

On this episode Cody and Paul welcomed two friends of the show back to The I in Us, Bonnie Hart and Steph Lum, who were responsible for leading some ground-breaking immersive workshops at two Intersex Peer Support Australia (IPSA) retreats in 2017, which gave rise the publication of an academic paper, “Intersex lived experience: trauma and posttraumatic growth in narratives” (2021), and the publishing of a wonderful book, “Unspoken”, in 2023. At the workshops participants were invited to contribute anonymous reflections, writings, drawings and letters to their past or future self, parents, friends, lovers, doctors… or anyone who has had a significant role in an aspect of their life as someone with an intersex variation. Similarly, parents, carers, partners and family members of someone who has an intersex variation, were invited to a write a letter to their past self or future self, their child as a younger or older person, their partner or lovers, their child’s doctors…or anyone who played a significant role in an aspect of their journey supporting someone with an intersex variation. In addition to discussing this unparalleled project, we also learned how members of the intersex community can contribute to the next publication, Unspoken 2. https://interaction.org.au/resource/unspoken-a-collection-of-untold-intersex-stories/?fbclid=IwY2xjawRVFmhleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFTeHBOSm5aaUFjMWl0aHJzc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhzqJFdhvIqgnMaLyLUBvNMbe0CwwnLEPE1n3jIKmsndB7epGqqfl0ZZkF8A_aem_jJd0BBnIx1HgZ_9gG-UBYQ [https://interaction.org.au/resource/unspoken-a-collection-of-untold-intersex-stories/?fbclid=IwY2xjawRVFmhleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFTeHBOSm5aaUFjMWl0aHJzc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhzqJFdhvIqgnMaLyLUBvNMbe0CwwnLEPE1n3jIKmsndB7epGqqfl0ZZkF8A_aem_jJd0BBnIx1HgZ_9gG-UBYQ] To re-live previous episodes, visit joy.org.au/theiinus [http://joy.org.au/theiinus] ENJOY! Margie McCumstie

Paul and Cody welcome Margie McCumstie to this episode of The I in Us.  Margie is the InterAction for Health and Human Rights Training and Communications Coordinator in Australia.   They highlight the inaugural intersex women and non-binary retreat, plus her whirlwind, ten-day trip to New York. Margie participated in Outright International’s Advocacy Week off-site events.  These events are associated with the Seventieth Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).  The event featured a session on the rights of intersex people, particularly women.  CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body which exclusively promotes gender equality and the empowerment of women.  Outright International  invited Margie to attend this event which testifies the place Australia and InterAction holds internationally in respect to intersex rights. In conclusion, Margie shared, “It was such an honour to participate in the first-ever intersex side-event inside the UN Headquarters in New York as part of 70th Commission on the Status of Women.” Enjoy listening to this great episode..
