About The New World Pictures Podcast

The New World Pictures Podcast is dedicated to every movie released by New World Pictures.  We talk about the things we loved and the things we hated along with the detailed history of each film's history and production.    Founded by the infamous Roger Corman, New World Pictures was responsible for the greatest genre and exploitation films of the 1970's and 1980's.  Remember all those movies that lived proudly in the Action, Horror, Comedy and Sci-Fi isles of the video store?  Titles like Death Race 2000, Hellraiser, Heathers and Piranha.  They were all made by New World Pictures.   In addition to talking about the films themselves, we talk with the Writers, Producers and Directors who worked with New World Pictures.

Interview with editor/director R.J. Kizer (GALAXY OF TERROR)

To close out #SciFiJuly: An Infinity of Titles, we going all-out by bringing back editor/director R.J. Kizer, who edited a variety of films for New World Pictures, to talk to us about GALAXY OF TERROR! R.J. was one of film's editors and worked on the most infamous scene in the entire film (hint: there's a worm)! We go truly behind the scenes, as R.J. describes the working conditions for editors on Roger Corman's infamous Lumberyard Studio, and what it was like to edit for Roger Corman and GALAXY OF TERROR director Bruce Clark! Do we discuss the Infinity of Titles? Of course we do! Do we discuss how R.J. got the film a "R" rating from a "X?" Oh, we do!  Plus, R.J. explains how he appeased the request for a "love scene," and, oh yeah, drops a few details about BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS and SPACE RAIDERS! R.J. is full of great stories, as you would know if you heard our episode about GODZILLA 1985 [https://www.newworldpicturespodcast.com/interview-with-godzilla-1985-co-director-r-j-kizer/] and/or his New World Career [https://www.newworldpicturespodcast.com/interview-with-editor-director-r-j-kizer-hell-comes-to-frogtown-battle-beyond-the-stars-up-from-the-depths/]! Ep. 178: Galaxy of Terror featuring Tarik Davis

We continue  #ScifiJuly: An Infinity of Titles with the inspiration for this month's themed title: 1981's GALAXY OF TERROR! Roger Corman's second foray into science fiction shot at the Lumberyard Studio in Venice California featured an all-star cast and production design from James Cameron, Robert and Dennis Skotak and the rest of the crew Corman assembled for BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, but, this time, Cameron also directs 2nd Unit, in what could be seen as a warm-up to his later ALIENS though it is truly a warm-up to his directorial debut PIRANHA II: THE SPAWNING and we'll tell you how! Joining us for the adventure through space that just so happens to be the perfect vehicle for a corporate training video is actor and filmmaker Tarik Davis, who first joined us for ANDROID [https://www.newworldpicturespodcast.com/ep-22-android-featuring-tarik-davis-the-amber-ruffin-show/] back in our early days! Tarik's new film, We're Not in Harlem Anymore, is currently playing in festivals, so keep an eye out and you may be able to see it in your city soon!  In the meantime, Tarik explains all the lessons GALAXY OF TERROR has for your company, and there are many! So many lessons! So many surprises! So join us as we head our special crew discusses the work of another crew - though, let's be honest, we're not here to discuss Cos, because who would - and learn about how you can be your best self! Sometimes it takes a giant, uh, lesson to do so! So grab your crystals, finish up that waterslide ride, and blur your face up as we dive into GALAXY OF TERROR! episode Interview with director and VFX artist Ernest Farino (THE TERMINATOR, GALAXY OF TERROR, STEEL AND LACE) artwork

Interview with director and VFX artist Ernest Farino (THE TERMINATOR, GALAXY OF TERROR, STEEL AND LACE)

We continue #SciFiJuly: An Infinity of Titles with a giant interview with director and visual effects supervisor Ernest Farino! From an early age, Ernest was fascinated by special effects and his love for filmmaking would take him from creating the stop-motion creature in 1978's THE ALIEN FACTOR to Los Angeles and working for Roger Corman at the Venice Lumberyard studio on films like GALAXY OF TERROR and beyond! There, he would meet James Cameron and would work on films like THE TERMINATOR and THE ABYSS! We walk through Ernest's career, which included working on John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE THING as well as doing effects and main title sequences for a variety of New World Pictures films from the Corman era to the next ownership group! We discuss the difficulty of bats in SATURDAY THE 14TH and Sybil Danning's costume in the TV edit of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, the tricky ending of DEATHSTALKER, having lots of time and no time to work on the title sequences for GODZILLA 1985 and PRETTY SMART, and how Ernest's work on TAG: THE ASSASSINATION GAME may have played a key role in casting for THE TERMINATOR! Also, Ernest explains how he dealt with Arnold Schwarzenegger's biggest, erm, muscle, and how he was able to get away with saying "no" to James Cameron! Ernest provided us with tons of stories, including about his directorial feature debut, STEEL AND LACE, which NWPPVIPs know is a film we love! Don't miss this wide-ranging and fascinating trip through Ernest's huge career that's filled with behind-the-scenes stories that you won't want to miss! episode Nearly New World: Star Slammer artwork

Nearly New World: Star Slammer

Sci-fi July: An Infinity of Titles keeps on rolling with 1986's STAR SLAMMER aka PRISON SHIP aka STAR SLAMMER: PRISON SHIP aka THE ADVENTURES OF TAURA: PRISON SHIP STAR SLAMMER.  Directed Fred Olen Ray, STAR SLAMMER (aka PRISON SHIP aka... you get it) blends comedy with sword and sandal movies, women in prison movies, sci-fi movies and girls just want to have fun movies into a taught hour and 26 minutes.   STAR SLAMMER stars Sandy Brook (They Call Me Bruce?) as Taura who is wrongly confined to a prison ship aka STAR SLAMMER (not again). In reality, STAR SLAMMER is little more than a prison-style all-inclusive resort where instead of sitting by the pool, you get pushed around by intimidating staff.  You get free food, alcohol, impromptu dance clubs and, the most coveted of experiences, solitary confinement. We get deep in this episode.  Erica asks the question everyone has been asking, "what is the purpose of a thong in space?" We discuss the effects of space travel on perms including whether the bends also have an effect. We discuss the best, bad-ass prison nicknames like "Sleep Apnea Bitch".  And we even spend some time talking about Radiohead.  Did you know they're big deep sea divers?  You will after listening to this episode.    Ultimately, STAR SLAMMER should be a must-eat menu item from Denny's.  You hear that, Denny's?  This is a free idea you should consider. Get on it before IHOP does. You're welcome. Ep. 177: The Aurora Encounter featuring James Kirkland

Sci-fi July: An Infinity of Titles has landed! Listeners Sci-fi July is going to out of this world this month starting with a banger 1986's sci-fi western, THE AURORA ENCOUNTER. We are joined this week by special guest James Kirkland making his NWPP debut. James is a comedian, actor, author of the The Bill Walton Mysteries series of books, and you may have seen or heard his work on his podcast: MicroDrama Doses, where he and his co-host watch and review vertical films. Directed by Jim McCullough Sr. and starring Jack Elam as Charlie, a washed up actor and blatant checkers cheater and Peter Brown as Sheriff, the hunky boyfriend and (surprise) town sheriff. THe AURORA ENCOUNTER set in 1897 follows the residents of Aurora, Texas who are visited by an extraterrestrial being whose presence divides the community, and also brings them all together. Awwwww....what could go wrong?! Join us as we learn about Marc's long musical history with this film, Ryan's long history with Weekly World News and his fashion industry ties to Bat Boy. James explores his theory we all have a little Charlie in us, and Erica ponders a new direction and genre for Steamin'! This is an episode that you won't want to miss!
