The Pre-Med Playbook
You can be the “smart kid” your whole life and still get humbled fast by the first year of medical school. Right after finishing their last exam, three NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine students sit down with me to unpack what the transition really feels like, from the relief of being “25% doctors” to the stress of never feeling fully ready for a test. We dig into imposter syndrome and the practical ways they fight it, especially after a rough quiz or before a simulated patient encounter. They explain why med school earns the “drinking from a fire hose” reputation, how they learn to accept that you cannot know everything, and what it takes to keep moving anyway. We also get specific about medical school study strategies and time management: strict schedules, hard cutoffs, recharge days, spaced repetition with Anki, practice questions, and the underrated power of a study group. You’ll also hear what surprised them most, the wins that brought their motivation back, and a clear overview of first-year curriculum including foundations, neuro, systems, and osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). We close with what they wish they’d known earlier and how they plan to use summer break to rest, reconnect, and build momentum before boards prep ramps up. If this helped, subscribe, share with a future med student, and leave a review with your best first-year survival tip. @arkansasstatemedianetwork.com. 0:00 - Surviving the First Year 3:15 - Becoming “25% Doctors.” 8:40 - Battling Imposter Syndrome 14:20 - Drinking from a Fire Hose 22:05 - Med School Study Strategies 28:30 - Anki, Repetition, and Study Groups 35:10 - Curriculum Breakdown: Neuro & OMM 43:55 - Surprising Wins and Motivation 51:20 - Summer Break and Board Prep Plans
