Democratic vice presidential candidate and Howard University graduate Kamala Harris is the first alumnus of a Historically Black College or University to run on a major party's presidential ticket. That background counts in North Carolina, which has more HBCUs than any state, according to U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield, who earned undergrad and law degrees from North Carolina Central University, an HBCU.
