What makes the work of memory transformative in the afterlives of political violence, such as dictatorships, war, genocide, plantation slavery and settler colonialism? As a global collective of artists, academics and community leaders, we embrace methodologies that uphold reciprocal, relational, respectful and emplaced collaborations grounded in ways of knowing and activating memory in the lived experiences of persons and collectives affected by mass violence. The TMIN opens intellectual, affective and creative spaces to interrogate the ways memory: activates alternative ways of seeing, listening and being in the world; serves to persevere, regather and refashion ways of being together in the precariousness of ongoing violence; emerges in sentient beings, landscapes, bodies, and objects; and, anticipates a different kind of future, and so exceeds the political, social and legal institutions that maintain relations of power, dispossession and oppression.
