UnPrepped: Aging, Receiving Love & Listening to Your Intuition | Ep. 44 | The Why Of It All

Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Welcome to an “UnPrepped” episode of The Why Of It All — part catch-up, part therapy session, part who-knows-where-this-will-go. Real, raw and authentic. No structured outlines, no notes, we’re just wingin’ it — because life and healing aren’t scripted…and if we planned it, it wouldn’t be this good. In this episode, we catch up after Gina’s 50th birthday — and talk honestly about the emotional experiences that came up for Gina around the celebration. Turning 50 opened the door to self-reflection. We talk about how guilt and “not good enough” stories sneak in when people show up for us, what it actually looks like to let yourself be celebrated without shrinking or apologizing for it, and the importance of actually allowing yourself to receive love. From there, the conversation shifts into intuition, insomnia, and what happens when you ignore your inner guidance system. Melanie unpacks how a recent experience of self-betrayal provided greater clarity on how fear of judgment disguises itself as overthinking, and why listening to your gut matters more than what others think. We also dive into the rejection of societal programs around aging and why getting older isn’t something to hide from — it’s something to honor. The wisdom, clarity, and self-acceptance that come with lived experience aren’t a liability…they’re the whole point. This episode is about noticing the patterns, naming them without shame, and choosing to do things differently next time — not from perfectionism, but from the personal growth and self-respect that comes with age and intentionally healing as you go. And as always, it’s messy, reflective, unfiltered, and very us — because healing doesn’t happen in polished soundbites, it happens in real conversations like this. This episode is our 1 year anniversary special, and we decided it would be fun to reflect on the last year of this great adventure in podcasting and purpose. We talk about the birth and the evolution of the show, the behind-the-scenes growing pains, the technical frustrations, the pivots, and the constant learning curve that comes with building something meaningful from the ground up. We also share how starting this podcast didn’t just change our creative lives — it deepened our friendship. Working together challenged us in new ways, forced growth in communication and conflict resolution, and ultimately brought us closer. This episode is a celebration of trusting inner guidance, following passion, and staying committed to inspired purpose when quitting would’ve been easier. More than anything, this is a reminder to pause and celebrate your wins. Healing isn’t just about pushing forward — it’s about recognizing how far you’ve come, feeling gratitude for your growth, and allowing yourself to say, “I’m proud of myself,” without guilt or ego. episode How To Live Again After Loss with Marcia Earhart | Ep. 42 | The Why Of It All artwork

How To Live Again After Loss with Marcia Earhart | Ep. 42 | The Why Of It All

How do you live again after loss—when grief doesn’t just break your heart, but shatters your identity as well? In this powerful and deeply moving episode, we sit down with Grief Counselor Marcia Earhart for one of the most comprehensive, compassionate, and practical conversations on grief we’ve ever had, including a set of immediately implementable tools to support the grieving process. Marcia’s story is extraordinary. By the age of 18, she had experienced 17 significant losses. As an adult, she endured the unimaginable loss of not one, but two of her sons - one in a tragic accident and another, several years later, was murdered - along with the loss of her mother and the unraveling and rebuilding of her family identity. Rather than allowing grief to define her, Marcia chose to let it transform her—and now dedicates her life to helping others breathe again, move again, and live again after loss. Together, we explore: * Why grief isn’t just emotional—it lives in the body, brain, and nervous system * How unprocessed grief can turn into trauma, illness, and emotional stagnation * The importance of intentional grieving (including “scheduled grief”) * How to recognize and challenge the lies grief tells the mind * Why movement, nature, gratitude, boundaries, and community are essential to healing * The little-known danger of being taken advantage of while grieving  * How to honor loved ones without allowing their death to define their life—or yours * The thinness of the veil, spiritual presence, and finding peace with death * What it truly means to allow grief without becoming consumed by it This conversation is raw, reverent, and expansive—touching on faith, neuroscience, trauma healing, spirituality, and practical tools you can use immediately, whether your loss is recent or decades old. If you or someone you love is navigating grief—whether from the death of a loved one, the loss of identity, divorce, illness, or unfulfilled dreams—this episode offers hope without bypassing pain, and healing without denying reality. Because grief was never meant to have the final word. About Our Guest: Marcia Earhart, HeartSync Facilitator, Life, Grief, and Trauma Coach, Mental Health First Responder, Mediator, and as the Founder of The Sterling Rose Sanctuary, a nonprofit devoted to supporting those who are grieving through education, community, and healing-centered resources. Through guided modalities and compassionate care, they help people heal from all-consuming heartbreak and rediscover their inherent purpose, new identity and live again. She is also the author of Gripping Grace in the Garden of Grief, a book born directly from her own lived experience in the depths of loss. 🔗 Website: www.thesterlingrosesanctuary.us [http://www.thesterlingrosesanctuary.us] 🔗 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TSRS21 [https://www.facebook.com/TSRS21] 🔗 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesterlingrosesanctuary/ [https://www.instagram.com/thesterlingrosesanctuary/] 🔗 Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcia-earhart-the-sterling-rose-sanctuary-943a8410b/ [https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcia-earhart-the-sterling-rose-sanctuary-943a8410b/] *************** The best way to support our show is to help us expand our reach! episode Life, Purpose & Functional Medicine with Drs. Mark & Michele Sherwood | Ep. 41 | The Why Of It All artwork

Life, Purpose & Functional Medicine with Drs. Mark & Michele Sherwood | Ep. 41 | The Why Of It All

In this episode of The Why Of It All, we sit down with powerhouse couple Dr. Mark Sherwood and Dr. Michele Sherwood, “The Original BioHackers,” and founders of The Functional Medicine Institute to explore the story behind the practice - the lived experiences, losses, detours, and wake-up calls that shaped their whole-person approach to healing, brought them together, and inspired the formation of their globally-recognized work in Functional Medicine.  We start with Michele’s story. She shares her deeply personal journey—from elite martial arts training and Olympic aspirations, to devastating injury, homelessness, and the long road of healing that eventually led her into Osteopathic and Functional Medicine. Then, Mark opens up about his years in law enforcement, his development of the officer wellness program, and the moment he realized that modern medicine wasn’t addressing the root causes of chronic illness—or the alarming decline in health and longevity. Together, we talk about: * Why symptoms are not the problem—they’re signals * How trauma, stress, nutrition, and environment shape long-term health * The difference between codependence and interdependence in healing and relationships * What functional medicine actually looks like when it’s done with integrity * Why fear-based health narratives (including around genetics and methylation) miss the bigger picture * How healing requires personal responsibility and compassion * Why real longevity is about health span, not just lifespan We also dive into topics like nutrition misinformation, the evolution of the food pyramid, metabolic health, epigenetics, biohacking, and the importance of daily structure, discipline, and intention in creating sustainable wellness. At its core, this episode is about truth, resilience, and hope, and the reminder that healing doesn’t come from outsourcing our health, but from understanding ourselves more deeply and choosing differently. About the Sherwoods: Drs. Mark Sherwood, ND, and Michele L. Neil-Sherwood, DO, are the powerhouse team behind Tulsa’s Functional Medical Institute, where they’re revolutionizing wellness with a whole-person, comprehensive results-driven approach. Un-Prepped: Self-Love, Setbacks & Setting Intentions | Ep. 40 | The Why Of It All

Sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Welcome to an “Un-Prepped” episode of The Why Of It All — part catch-up, part therapy session, part who-knows-where-this-will-go. Real, raw and authentic. No structured outlines, no notes, we’re just wingin’ it — because life and healing aren’t scripted…and if we planned it, it wouldn’t be this good.  In this episode, Gina and Melanie sit down for our first Un-Prepped conversation of 2026 and catch up about where we’re at right now—what the new year feels like, what we’re letting go of, and how our healing journeys are actually unfolding in real time. We talk about intentions for the year ahead, not as rigid goals, but as ways of being more present, more intentional, and more honest with ourselves. We open up about how heavy last year was, what it looks like when old patterns, chronic pain, and emotional triggers resurface after you thought you were “past it.”  We also dive into self-love, loneliness, and what it means to stop looking outside yourself for validation. We talk about learning to enjoy your own company, letting go of people-pleasing, caring less about what others think, and what it means to truly BE love. We talk about developing the discipline to prioritize to your own wellbeing, and own up to the made-up stories and excuses we tell ourselves to justify bad habits instead of just making a different choice. This episode is a reminder that awareness matters, progress isn’t perfect, and growth doesn’t mean you never struggle again. For us, it’s very much in process—because we don’t have it all figured out, and we never pretend to. We’re just two friends talking it out in real time, sharing what we’re learning as we go.
