The Wilkie Collins Library
In which the anxious and nervously delicate Mr. Fairlie reluctantly recounts the unwelcome visit of Lady Glyde’s maid, Fanny, who delivers a troubling letter from Miss Halcombe, and the subsequent arrival of the imposing and ever-so-persistent Count Fosco, who entreats Mr. Fairlie to offer refuge to Lady Glyde amidst grave domestic troubles. With a mixture of bewildered resignation and faint amusement, Mr. Fairlie wrestles with his frail health and the burdens imposed upon him by his inconvenient family ties, all while navigating the urgent and unsettling requests that threaten to disturb his solitary quietude.
