Ep110 | Compassion Over Comparison: Meeting Yourself Where You Are

Have you ever looked at an old photo of yourself and felt a sudden, sharp pang of judgment? Maybe it was a version of you that moved more easily, looked stronger, or balanced with more grace. It’s a common experience, but in today’s episode, Heidi explores why this "Montage Trap" is the ultimate thief of peace—and how our yoga practice can help us dismantle it. The inspiration for this episode came while Heidi was digging through 13 years of photos for her son’s Bar Mitzvah video. Seeing past versions of her yoga practice led to a sneaky inner dialogue of "I used to be..." and "Why can't I still...?" This realization sparked a powerful class focused on hip rotation and balance—a physical territory where aging and change are often exposed immediately. In this episode, we explore: * The Montage Trap: Why viewing ourselves as static photos instead of dynamic processes creates unnecessary suffering. * Anitya (Impermanence): How yoga teaches us to accept that change is the only constant, and why resisting it leads to "the argument with reality." * Vairāgya (Non-attachment): Redefining non-attachment as the practice of "discolouring" memories so they don't make our present moment feel lacking. * Physiological Compassion: Why meeting yourself with kindness isn't just a "nice" idea, but a biological requirement for balance and stability. * Ahiṃsā as Non-Comparison: Viewing the act of comparing our current selves to past versions as a form of internal violence, and how to put down that weapon. * Warrior 3 to Half Moon: A conversational look at a "peak movement" that reveals our habits of self-criticism and invites us to "meet ourselves here." Yoga is not a performance; it is a relationship. And like any healthy relationship, it requires compassion, not judgment—especially as we move through the seasons of our lives. episode Ep109 | Roots & Branches: What the Redwoods Teach Us About Strength artwork

Ep109 | Roots & Branches: What the Redwoods Teach Us About Strength

In nature, we are often transfixed by the "branches"—the visible growth, the blossoms, and the outward expansion. But the secret to the resilience of the massive Redwood tree isn't found in its height; it’s found in its root system. In today's episode, Heidi takes us on a hayride through a tulip field to explore a powerful metaphor for Mother’s Day and beyond: the beauty of interdependence. Despite growing over 300 feet tall, Redwoods have surprisingly shallow roots. Their strength comes from the fact that their roots spread outward, intertwining with the trees around them. They stand because they hold each other up. This episode dives into how we can translate this biological wisdom into our yoga practice and our nervous systems through the lens of co-regulation and community. In this episode, we explore: * The Redwood Metaphor: Why true strength isn't about independence, but about the interconnected root systems that allow us to withstand life’s storms. * The Neuroscience of Co-Regulation: How our nervous systems find safety and stability when we are grounded in the presence of others. * Yoga as Sangha: Reclaiming the concept of spiritual community and moving away from the "self-sufficient" myth of modern fitness. * The "Forest Tree" Practice: A conversational look at a physical class sequence—from side-lying Child’s Pose to a communal Tree Pose circle—that embodies the feeling of being supported. * Rooting to Rise: How physical stability in our "roots" (our feet and foundation) creates the physiological safety needed for the body to actually expand and open. * Mother’s Day & Beyond: Navigating the complexity of our origins and honoring the people who helped shape our roots, whether through traditional nurturing or chosen community. Strength has never been about standing alone. Whether you are a teacher looking for inspiration or a practitioner looking for grounding, this episode is a reminder that you were never meant to hold yourself up by yourself. episode Ep108 | The Grip: Why Effort Doesn't Guarantee the Outcome artwork

Ep108 | The Grip: Why Effort Doesn't Guarantee the Outcome

In this deeply personal episode, Heidi explores a pivotal moment from her own life—her son Ari’s emergency open-heart surgery this past August—to dive into one of the most challenging teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. We often think of our effort as a transaction: if we work hard enough, we deserve a specific result. But what happens when the outcome is out of our hands? Heidi discusses the concept of Karma Yoga (the yoga of action without attachment) and how we can move from a "transactional" practice to a "transformational" one. In this episode, we cover: * The Power of Powerlessness: Lessons learned while pacing the halls of Boston Children’s Hospital. * Bhagavad Gita 2.47: Breaking down the teaching: "You have a right to your actions, but never to the fruits of your actions." * The "Haywire" Nervous System: How linking our peace to outcomes creates constant anxiety. * Thematic Throughlines: What they are in Chromatic Yoga and how to "drop breadcrumbs" for your students. * Peak Pose Application: Using Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon) to physically embody the "wobble" of effort vs. result.
