On July 18, 1877, Thomas Edison successfully recorded and played back sound for the first time using his newly invented phonograph. By speaking the words "Mary Had a Little Lamb" into the machine, Edison demonstrated that sound could be preserved and replayed, revolutionizing communication and entertainment. Although the early phonograph had limitations, continued improvements made it practical for recording music, preserving voices, and business dictation. Edison's invention paved the way for the modern technologies we use today to enjoy music, audiobooks, podcasts, and other forms of recorded sound.
