About We are Able!

Interview series evaluating 'We are Able!', a 5 year (2021-2026) programme in 6 African countries to serve people with a disability achieving a sustainable, fully-fledged place in their community, aiming to gain greater food security. WaA! is initiated and funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented in Burundi, Democratic Republic Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Participating organisations: ADF, The Leprosy Mission, See You, VNGi, The Hague Academy for Local Government, and ZOA (lead). Interviews conducted by KlaasJan Baas, spokesperson of ZOA.

Angutoko Paulino Jacinto experienced serious improvements through We are Able! program

Mr. Angutoko Paulino Jacinto is the chairperson of the Arua City Union of Perseon with Disabilities (ACUPED). During the implementation period of We are Able (2021-2025) he experienced serious improvements for people with disabilities - like Mr. Jacinto himself. The most important change is that the government bodies have become aware of the existence and the endless possibilities of people with disabilities. "It has boosted the self-confidence immensely, especially to stand up for their rights and get in touch with the government, and now they are listening. Even the number of beggars has been reduced in recent years."

Peter Okello Douglas: how a district chairperson changed his mind - and his policy on citizens with disabilities

Peter Okello Douglas is the Chairperson of the Omoro District in Northern Uganda. Though the We are Able-project Peter became aware of the position and the strengths of people wit disabilities in his district. Confronted with this, he decided to change his policy and political influence to take maximum advantage of the qualities of this underestimated group.
