Cody Hinkley, a wildlife biology graduate student at Western Colorado University, spent 2.5 years studying a reintroduced bighorn sheep herd deep in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison—one of the most rugged and remote landscapes in Colorado. After being wiped out by disease in the 1970s and reintroduced in the 1990s, the herd is now thriving. In 2025, Colorado Parks & Wildlife opened the first ram hunt in the unit in over 50 years—due in part to research like this. From 71 trail cameras to relentless miles in brutal terrain, Cody shares what it really takes to study and restore one of Colorado’s most iconic species—and what it means for the future of conservation and hunting.
