About Women Veteran Social Justice

Our mission is to Identify, Connect, and Empower women veterans through social, professional and personal connections. We do this by utilizing electronic and live networking across communities, across the United States and internationally. Technology and collaboration have been tools to firmly anchor and connect an otherwise invisible nation of women who have served with those who are serving and those who are preparing to serve in the military.

Ep: 038 – It All Started With A Creative Writing Project, Unsung Heroes

It  All Started With A Creative Writing Project: 20 Year Later We Are Still Collecting & Telling The Unheard Stories and Writing & Archiving The Unwritten History of Unsung. Heroes On this Podcast, BriGette McCoy talks with Lisa Daniels about her creative writing project, aka her “labor of love”, Unsung Heroes. Lisa created Unsung Heroes over 20 years ago. Her project’s inspiration, her grandmother, a women of color who supported the war mission, continues to motivate her to keep gathering stories and authoring the history of the many who are left out of the books, such as: men of color who served, women of color who supported the war mission, and women of color who served. Listen in as BriGette and Lisa discuss their commitment to get out the long-suppressed narratives of women who served, in particular women of color. Find out about their upcoming collaborative project, a virtual exhibit, HerStory. The project is designed to bring forward the histories that have been unheard for so long, identify and safeguard present histories from being omitted, and construct a system that will preserve  future histories so that they will not be overlooked or left out.  The importance of getting the stories documented is that it broadens the story being told and adds the accomplishments, contributions, and significant firsts of those left off those lists. Nurtured and Affirmed: Being Part Of A Legacy In Service To The Country

Nurtured and Affirmed: Being Part Of  A Legacy In Service To The Country Chaplain Karen Meeker speaks about her 20+ years of military service and how she continues to add to the legacy in service to the country as a Colonel who recruits chaplains. She was inspired to join the military, and specifically serve in military ministry, in response to being called by God. Her desire to serve in ministry was nurtured at a young age while growing up in the United Methodist Church, as was her aspiration for serving the country. She talks about how her rural Northeast Pennsylvania community encouraged, affirmed, and supported giving back to the country in service, and how the United Methodist Church, which ordains women, provided her the possibilities to become a minister. Listen in as she describes her journey of military training and her education process to become a minister. She humbly talks about how she became part of a long history of women chaplains dating back to the Civil War, and how she created her own “Firsts” while serving in the 82ndAirborne. Aside from her continued service in the military, she supports military women ministries and she recently provided expert knowledge at a moral injury conference. Her closing words of encouragement are fulfilling for the mind, body, and spirit to all.Sponsors, Donors, Support Staff Thanks to our sponsors and In-Kind Donors:AARP Georgia [https://states.aarp.org/georgia/]Protect Our Defenders [https://www.protectourdefenders.com/]Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum [https://www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov/museum]SheHeroIC [http://twitter.com/sheheroic]Find us on our social channels and post a message about the podcast:WVSJ Network Facebook Page [http://www.facebook.com/4wvsj]Twitter Page [https://twitter.com/wvsjnetwork]Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/wvsjnetwork/] Podcast Editing: by ParThon Music By: Air Force Veteran Connie Baptiste  “Always On Top” can be found on Women At War Warrior Songs Vol 2.https://warriorsongs.org/music [https://warriorsongs.org/music]

Danique Masingill speaks about her 5 years of military service as a Master at Arms in the Navy, and how she continues serving veterans with a peer to peer approach through her nonprofit, Leashes of Valor. She shares about how being motivated to join the military was related to being “one of those people who joined because of 9/11”. Danique shares about how she carried her dream of wanting to become a K-9 cop to her civilian life. She shares the story of how a chance meeting with a fellow female veteran, who had a service dog, brought her down a new path to learn everything about service dogs, which then brought her to her life’s work in her non-profit. Danique joined the military to serve at a time when the world needed patriots; she has expanded her understanding of what being a patriot means. Find out how she helps fellow veterans by using her experiences as a mentoring tool, and her service dogs as a “prosthetic for the brain” for invisible injuries.
