Your phone is full of messages, photos, and threads you swear you’ll scroll back to someday. But what happens when the platform changes, an account disappears, or “someday” never comes? We’re Angella and Leslie, two 60-something Black women from Brooklyn on a joy journey, and we’re making the case for something radically simple: handwritten letters, cards, and real written correspondence. We dig into why letter writing still matters, from the “juicy” mother-child letters that hold conversations you’d never say out loud on a call, to the boxes of old notes that become a personal archive of love.  Want behind the scenes content, Join us on Patreon at $5 or $10 level:  https://patreon.com/user?u=83534204 Get Angie’s eBook:  We’re Too Old for This! Ep 187 Summer Podcast Club: What is ours and where is our home?

This week, we continue with Tara Roberts’ National Geographic podcast Into the Depths, episodes 3 & 4.  Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is where she meets Afro-Costa Rican teen divers bringing up pieces from wrecks linked to Danish slave ships. Should descendants and local communities be the ones who name, interpret, and keep what they find or is it the responsibility of academically trained archeologists? We connect this to familiar patterns of gatekeeping, from Black hair braiding certifications to how African American midwives were pushed aside when institutions decided tradition was not “legitimate” enough. In episode 4, Tara travels to Africa for the first time and runs into a reality many of us wonder about:  Is the dream of a homecoming with open arms  a reasonable or a fantastical expectation?  We unpack diaspora  identity, the grief of not fully belonging anywhere, and the reframing that may be helpful in finding peace. Listen, then leave your comments so we can chat and connect with more listeners. Ep186 Summer Podcast Club: Tara pursues the humanity of 1.8 million lost souls

12.5 million Africans were brought to the Americas between the 1500s and 1800s. 1.8 million died along the way. More than 40 countries are involved in the commerce of human beings. So, did you do this week's homework assignment? If you listened to episodes one [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/podcasts/into-the-depths/article/episode-1-trusting] and two [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/podcasts/into-the-depths/article/episode-2-training] of National Geographic Explorer Tara Roberts [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/black-divers-are-finding-underwater-slave-ships-and-reclaiming-their-history]’ podcast Into The Depths [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/podcasts/into-the-depths], move to the top of the class! In this episode, Besties Angella and Leslie talk about what it means to seriously pursue a calling with a long runway (like leaving a good job), how friends push you toward your “big yes,” and why so many of us quit when the first few tries don’t deliver results. We look forward to hearing from you.
