One book came to my attention and it's called Family Wealth and it's by James Hughes. An idea came to me after talking with my wife about something that I've talked in shared about on video before, and that's looking at the family as a business, but what if we look at your role as the family CEO? it's your role as a CEO is to establish the vision and the mission for your family, for your family unit. A lot of what we do as estate planning attorneys, real estate lawyers, and even in real estate syndication has to do with the idea of legacy. And when you combine that with the succession plan, you've got a very powerful tool of making sure your legacy lasts. There are two ideas from the very beginning of the book Family Wealth that I thought were important and interesting enough share. The first is the quote that's oftentimes heard is that a lot of times families are "shirts sleeves to shirt sleeves in three generations." So, Mr. Hughes has an interesting idea, and that is it's similar to what we tell our clients as well. And that's looking at the wealth of the family and looking at the ideas of the family and looking that through the lens of what if we consider that whole thing a business. For the second, "Families should employ multiple quantitative and more importantly, qualitative techniques to enable them over a long period of time to make slightly more positive than negative decisions regarding the employment of their human intellectual and financial capital."
