Lake Effect: Shipwrecks of the Great Lakes
In this episode of Lake Effect, we tell the haunting true story of the Admiral and the Cleveco, two vessels lost on Lake Erie during a devastating winter storm on December 2, 1942. What began as a routine tow from Toledo to Cleveland became one of the worst maritime disasters in Lake Erie history. The Cleveco, a 260-foot steel tanker barge loaded with fuel oil, was being towed across the lake by the tug Admiral when hurricane-force winds, blinding snow, freezing spray, and towering waves turned the lake into a frozen battlefield. In the darkness, the Admiral suddenly vanished beneath the water. The Cleveco, now alone and helpless, drifted for hours while rescue crews fought through one of the worst storms ever seen on Lake Erie. If you’re interested in Great Lakes shipwrecks, Lake Erie disasters, maritime history, and forgotten true stories from the inland seas, this episode is for you. #GreatLakes #LakeErie #Shipwreck #MaritimeHistory #LakeEffect #GreatLakesShipwrecks #LakeErieDisaster #Cleveco #Admiral #shipwreckhistory
