Descripción

On this Thursday, Chloe Papadakis remembers a flag-design contest she ran for the children of Cedar Valley, and re-sees a much older one through it. In nineteen twenty-seven, the Territory of Alaska asked its schoolchildren to design a flag, and the winner was Benny Benson, a fourteen-year-old Alaska Native orphan whose eight gold stars, the Big Dipper and the North Star, became the state flag and later flew to the moon. For the country’s two hundred and fiftieth anniversary, Alaska has sealed a copy of his design into a time capsule, to be opened in the year twenty-two seventy-six. Out of everything a vast state could send to the future, Chloe notes, it chose the drawing of an orphaned boy, and she closes with what the story asks of us: ask the children to make something. You never know whose flag you are holding. The front porch is open. He Apologized to Me for His Teeth

Dr. Aisha Khalid reflects on a patient who apologized for his teeth and the surprising connection between oral health and the rest of the body. In this Quiet Echo episode, she explores why caring for your mouth is about far more than appearances and how small daily habits can protect your health in ways we are only beginning to understand. Quiet Echo is part of the fictional Cedar Valley News series, where national issues are explored through the lens of a small town grounded in connection, awareness, and everyday responsibility.
