PODCAST CLIP: WHY ARE WE REPEATING THE MISTAKES OF THE PAST WITH DATA CENTERS TODAY? The Buffalo News is reporting unusual rates of bladder cancer in parts of Niagara Falls. For many of us, this isn’t just another headline. It’s personal. My father died of bladder cancer at just 39 after working on some of these dangerous Niagara Falls sites. I know countless families across Niagara Falls who have similar stories. For generations, our community has lived with the legacy of toxic waste, contaminated land, and industrial pollution. We’ve paid a terrible price. So here’s what I can’t understand. After everything we’ve been through, why would we even consider replacing the poisons of the past with the potential environmental burdens of the future? I’m not against technology. But are we really going to gamble with one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth by putting massive industrial data centers along the Niagara River? Haven’t we learned anything? Niagara Falls deserves clean industry, thriving tourism, good-paying jobs, and a healthy future—not another experiment whose long-term consequences we’ll leave for our children to figure out. We owe ourselves—and the next generation—better than that.

I’m not a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. What I do know is this: I’ve spent my entire adult life fighting for universal healthcare, good public schools, strong unions, affordable education, a secure retirement, and an economy that works for working people—not just billionaires. Some people call those ideas democratic socialism. Others call them progressive politics or simply common sense. I’m less interested in the label than the outcome. I’ve always believed government should work for ordinary people, and in an era of billionaires—and even trillion-dollar fortunes—I think it’s reasonable to ask whether our economy is serving everyone as well as it should. Second: Why I oppose massive data centers on the Niagara River. Let me be clear: I support AI. I support innovation. I support technology. What I do not support is sacrificing one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth for giant industrial server farms. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity, require massive infrastructure, and create far fewer permanent jobs than their supporters often promise. Once we industrialize the Niagara River, there is no going back. Our future isn’t choosing between tourism and technology. We can have both. Build data centers on brownfields, existing industrial sites, and places designed for heavy industry—not beside the crown jewel of Western New York. Niagara Falls is our competitive advantage. It should be a world-class destination for tourism, recreation, research, and investment—not another industrial corridor. I’ll keep fighting for jobs. I’ll keep fighting for AI. But I will not stand by while we gamble away one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Technology can be built almost anywhere. For people outside of Western New York, Jeremy Zellner has been one of the most influential Democratic political figures in Erie County for nearly a decade. As chairman of the Erie County Democratic Committee, he helped build one of the strongest local Democratic organizations in New York State. Under his leadership, Democrats won races, expanded their influence, and became the dominant political force in much of Erie County. He wasn’t a household name to most voters, but inside politics, he was one of the people making major decisions about endorsements, strategy, fundraising, and party direction. That’s why his defeat is such a big story. This wasn’t just a candidate losing an election. It was the head of the political establishment being rejected by voters and party activists who wanted something different. The winner, Jon Rivera, wasn’t exactly an outsider. He comes from a well-known political family and has served in public office himself. But he did something few politicians are willing to do: he challenged the person who controlled much of the party structure. Most people wait their turn. Rivera didn’t. The bigger question is what happens next. Will Erie County Democrats move in a more progressive direction? Will new candidates emerge? Will long-standing political alliances begin to shift? And what does this mean for races up and down the ballot, including challenges to incumbents who may have once seemed untouchable? One thing is certain: the political landscape in Western New York looks very different today than it did a week ago.
