Acerca de Sports Weekend with Steve Thomson
Steve Thomson brings you sports news and more every weekend afternoon on WCCO Radio!
Train people are so cool
Steve kicks off the second hour parsing through the robust Saturday slate of sports. He and Lindsey discuss the feeling around the Minnesota Timberwolves and the lack of discipline to perform on a night to night basis, not just in playoffs. Heather Rule makes her weekly appearance from the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving State Championship to talk about the Minnesota Frost resuming their season. Steve and Lindsey perform their Read & React questions after Lindsey’s long hiatus.
Heather Rule emerges from the deep (end)
At 5:20pm we visit with Heather Rule who is covering the Minnesota State Swimming and Diving State Championship today. Steve used to spend many a day at swim meets so they chat a bit about the athletes competing today and how impressive of a feat it is to organize and execute a seamless swim meets. The Minnesota Frost are set to resume their schedule post Olympics tomorrow against the Montreal Victoire. Many of the players returning from the Olympics are banged up including Kendall Coyne Schofield. Heather sets the table for the Frost’s second half before heading back into the chlorine.
Another stamp in Steve’s passport of calling sports
The full first hour of the Sports Weekend with Steve Thomson for Saturday February 28th, 2026. Guests include Steve Carney, Jess Myers and Mark Manney.
“Getting to your game” at The Tourney with Andover Huskies HC Mark Manney
Mark Manney is the head coach for the Andover Huskies boys HS hockey team. They have emerged out of section 5 and are heading the State Tourney. Steve and Mark talk a bit about Andover switching sections and how that’s impacted their team and fans’ ability to watch them in a postseason. They chat about the journey the Huskies have been on this season and what they anticipate in their first game vs Edina at the Tourney.
What is Quinn Hughes’ medallion status?
Jess Myers covers the Wild for the Pioneer Press. The Wild are fresh off a loss to the Utah Mammoth who seem to have their number, they face the St. Louis Blues next. Jess talks about the Wild’s inevitability of playing the Dallas Stars in the playoffs as long as the Avs don’t asteroid back to earth. Jess touches on Quinn Hughes travel schedule. They also touch on the intensity that is the post season for boys HS hockey, the Gopher men’s team who have had a rough go from the start and a prediction for Abbey Murphy's financial future when she moves to the PWHL.
