The Angel of the Eucharist: Discovering Marie Estelle Harpin — J. Stephen Russell

J. Stephen Russell, retired professor of medieval literature and Catholic author, joins The Catholic Morning Show to share the story behind Angel of the Eucharist, his English translation of the writings of Marie Estelle Harpin (1814–1841). Who Was Marie Estelle Harpin? Born in 1814 in Santos, France, Marie Estelle was a middle-class young woman who apprenticed as a seamstress. As a teenager, she fell deeply in love with Jesus in the Eucharist, a devotion that utterly transformed her life. Though she faced mockery and alienation early on, her village — and eventually her bishop — came to recognize the beauty and depth of her holiness. She died at only 27 years old. Her bishop ordered her letters and memoir collected and published; the book went through four French editions from the 1840s through the 1880s but was never translated into English until now. Why Has She Been Forgotten? Russell reflects that causes for sainthood can carry a political dimension, and that candidates from less prominent dioceses can be lost in the shuffle. Interest in Marie Estelle peaked in the late nineteenth century, with brief English and French biographies around 1900, before fading entirely. Her cause was recently revived when the French bishops voted to resume studying her life — the link Russell discovered that drew him into the project. Her Spirituality Marie Estelle's Eucharistic devotion was extraordinarily intense. With her pastor's permission, she would spend entire nights on her knees before the tabernacle. One of her most powerful quotes from the translation: "Seek the God of comforts, not the comforts of God." Russell notes that her prayer life was rooted in relationship, not petition — not "ordering at the pickup window," as he put it. Her Humanity Despite her profound holiness, Marie Estelle was deeply relatable: she loved to dance, desired pretty clothes she could never afford, and once nearly stole a trinket before returning it the same day out of conscience. Russell suggests she offers a rich model of Catholic femininity — someone who navigated real temptations while keeping her eyes fixed on Christ. Where to Get the Book Angel of the Eucharist is available in hardback and paperback. Confirmation Moves to Sixth Grade in the Diocese of Des Moines — John Gaffney

John Gaffney, Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Des Moines, joins The Catholic Morning Show to unpack one of the most significant changes in sacramental preparation in the diocese in decades. Why the Change? The conversation began with a direct question from Bishop Johnson: is tenth grade the best place to confer confirmation? A diocesan task force — including clergy and laity from rural, suburban, and urban communities — analyzed data, surveyed parents and candidates, and studied what other dioceses across the country are doing. Two recommendations emerged: restored order (baptism, confirmation, and first Eucharist together, as at the Easter Vigil) and moving confirmation to sixth grade. Bishop discerned that the diocese was not yet ready for restored order, but moved forward with the sixth grade transition after extended prayer and discernment. The Discipleship Pathway The new model is not simply an age change — it is a complete rethinking of confirmation preparation structured around three phases: * Belonging and Identity — grounding candidates in their identity as beloved children of God before they encounter cultural pressures * Encounter — meeting Jesus and the Holy Spirit through Sacred Scripture and a mid-process retreat * Mission Readiness — launching sixth graders into active participation in the mission of the Church Parent and Sponsor Formation A parent formation component runs alongside the candidate process, acknowledging that parish faith formation time with young people is limited and that parents are the primary formators of faith. The Diocese is partnering with the Halo app, FORMED, and Our Sunday Visitor's Real + True program to provide aligned resources for parents to go deeper in their own faith. Dedicated sponsor resources are also being developed to equip confirmation sponsors for meaningful accompaniment. Timeline Resources are being assembled this summer, built on feedback from priests, deacons, faith formation leaders, and parents. Parish workshops will begin in the fall of 2026. The Catholic Morning Show - 06/10/2026

The Catholic Morning Show opens with a reminder of an upcoming community prayer event: join Catholic Des Moines police officers on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 1:30 PM at the Des Moines Police Department (25 East First Street, Des Moines) for a Rosary and Litany of the Sacred Heart for the State of Iowa, honoring city leaders, police officers, firefighters, EMS, medical personnel, and clergy. In the first interview, John Gaffney, Director of Faith Formation for the Diocese of Des Moines, walks listeners through the diocese's historic decision to move confirmation from tenth grade to sixth grade. Initiated by a question from Bishop Johnson, the change emerged from an extensive discernment process involving clergy, laity, parents, and current confirmation candidates from across the diocese — rural, suburban, and urban. The new model centers on a discipleship pathway with three phases: belonging and identity, encounter with Jesus and the Holy Spirit through Scripture and retreat, and mission readiness. Critically, the process includes a parent formation component, equipping families to serve as the domestic church. The Diocese is partnering with Halo, FORMED, and Our Sunday Visitor's Real + True program to resource both candidates and parents. Parish workshops will begin in the fall. Confirmation sponsors are also being given dedicated resources for the journey. Learn More at https://www.dmdiocese.org/ministries-and-faith-formation/youth-ministry/confirmation. [https://www.dmdiocese.org/ministries-and-faith-formation/youth-ministry/confirmation] In the second interview, author and translator J. Stephen Russell introduces Angel of the Eucharist, his English translation of the collected writings and memoir of Marie Estelle Harpin (1814–1841), a young French seamstress whose extraordinary love for Christ in the Eucharist transformed her life and village. Never before translated into English, the book is now available through Angelico Press and Amazon. Russell, a retired professor of medieval literature, shares striking quotes from Marie Estelle's writings and reflects on how her relatable humanity — her love of dancing, pretty clothes she couldn't afford, and her very real temptations — makes her a compelling model of Catholic femininity for women of all ages today. Also mentioned: the EWTN live stream of the Consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus takes place June 11, 2026 at 3:00 PM Central Time from the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe in Orlando, and can also be accessed through the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe website. 🔗 Iowa Catholic Radio: IowaCatholicRadio.com [http://IowaCatholicRadio.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] 🔗 Angel of the Eucharist on Amazon: Amazon.com [http://www.amazon.com/s?k=Angel+of+the+Eucharist+J+Stephen+Russell&utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] 🔗 Angelico Press: AngelicoPressBooks.com [http://www.angelicopress.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] 🔗 FORMED: FORMED.org [http://www.formed.org/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] 🔗 Halo App: HaloApp.com [http://www.haloapp.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #CatholicConfirmation #DiscipleshipPathway #DiocesOfDesMoines #Sacraments #CatholicYouth #DomesticChurch #EucharisticDevotion #AngelOfTheEucharist #MarieEstelleHarpin #CatholicSaints #CatholicWomen #SacredHeart #CatholicFaith #CatholicPodcast #CatholicRadio Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! Medieval Kingship, Liberty & the Myth of Democracy — Jeb Smith

Vermont-based historian Jeb Smith joins The Catholic Morning Show to discuss his provocative new book Missing Monarchy: Correcting Misconceptions About the Middle Ages, Medieval Kingship, Democracy and Liberty, published by Sensus Fidelium Press. Jeb argues that the medieval period — which he re-defines as roughly 600–1300 A.D., the era of Anglo-Saxon England and feudal Europe — was characterized by a deeply Catholic, natural law framework in which kings were servants and protectors of God-given law, not makers of it. This structure, he contends, kept government small, decentralized, and genuinely free in ways that modern democracy does not. In democracy, he argues, centralized power inevitably expands — eventually collapsing into oligarchy — because it operates on the humanistic premise that man, not God, is the ultimate lawgiver. By contrast, medieval self-governance was achieved not through voting, but through radical decentralization: neighboring communities could hold entirely different laws and customs, allowing people to live among like-minded neighbors without political coercion. Jeb references Thomas Aquinas's concept of united holds as an early articulation of this principle — one he sees the American founders partially implementing, though imperfectly. His prescription for today: strip power from the federal government and state governments alike and return it to the county level, restoring authentic local self-governance. He points to his article published in the Abbeville Institute as further reading on this argument. 🔗 Missing Monarchy — Sensus Fidelium Press [https://sensusfideliumpress.com/products/missing-monarchy-correcting-misconceptions-about-the-middle-ages-medieval-kingship-democracy-and-liberty?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]:  🔗 Also available on Amazon.com [https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Monarchy-Correcting-Misconceptions-Democracy/dp/B0D6FGC9YF] 🔗 Author Jeb Smith — Books, Articles & More [https://www.authorjebsmith.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] Listen to The Catholic Morning Show weekdays at 7 AM Central on the Catholic Radio Network at: 🔗 https://www.IowaCatholicRadio.com [https://www.IowaCatholicRadio.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] #MissingMonarchy #JebSmith #MiddleAges #MedievalKingship #CatholicHistory #Democracy #Liberty #NaturalLaw #Decentralization #ThomasAquinas #CatholicPolitics #MedievalHistory #SensusFideliumPress #AbbevilleInstitute #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #CatholicPodcast #CatholicIntellectual Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! The Mystic Behind the Surrender Novena: A Spiritual Biography of Father Dolindo Rotolo — Maria Palma Smith

Maria Palma Smith joins The Catholic Morning Show to illuminate the life and legacy of Father Dolindo Rotolo, a Neapolitan priest born in Naples in 1882 and a figure of remarkable spiritual depth. Father Dolindo is perhaps best known as the man to whom Jesus gave the prayer that would become the beloved Surrender Novena — a text that originated as a letter to one of his spiritual daughters and spread across Italy, Poland, Spain, and the Spanish-speaking world. Far from a life of ease, Father Dolindo endured decades of suffering, misunderstanding, and false accusation. Beginning shortly after his ordination, he was placed under a kind of spiritual microscope and ultimately forbidden from celebrating Mass for nearly 20 years — the longest continuous period being 16 years. During this time, he channeled his devotion into extraordinary writing: a personal autobiography and a monumental 33-volume commentary on Sacred Scripture written for the laity. He also composed original music. Father Dolindo's spirituality was profoundly Eucharistic and Marian — he called Our Lady "Mama" and sought her intercession in even the smallest decisions. Saint Padre Pio held him in the highest regard, considering him a saint. The biography Jesus, I Surrender Myself to You, co-authored with a devoted niece of Father Dolindo, is a rich resource for anyone seeking to deepen their own surrender to God. 🔗 Jesus, I Surrender Myself to You [https://tanbooks.com/products/books/jesus-i-surrender-myself-to-you-the-life-of-don-dolindo-ruotolo/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show] — TAN Books:  Also available on Amazon.
