[https://chapelboromedia.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/04155631/Whats-Treading-864x329-1.png] Trending today: Victor and Aaron discuss the proposed “Real Tickets, Real Fans Act,” [https://www.ncleg.gov/Sessions/2025/Bills/Senate/PDF/S849v1.pdf] which tries to stop bots from monopolizing ticket purchases. (That’s in the news especially around the market for Carolina Hurricanes tickets in the Stanley Cup Finals, but Victor and Aaron talk about it in the context of concert tickets – which are also facing the problem of Live Nation and Ticketmaster overcharging customers with excessive fees.) History Matters: 800 Years of History

This week, Scott covers 800 years of history – including the execution of six accused “Regulators” in Hillsborough in 1771, a controversy that became a key part of the run-up to the American Revolution. (Scott’s hosting a “Regulator Remembrance Day” event at 6 p.m. Friday, June 19, at the Regulators Historic Marker near the intersection of Cameron and East King Streets.) Also, the Magna Carta is signed in 1215; George Washington takes over the American army; and Susan B. Anthony is fined for attempting to vote. 97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com are your headquarters for local news and local voices in Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Every Thursday morning, local historian Scott Washington joins 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck for “History Matters,” a look back at notable events and significant figures from this week in history, ranging from pioneers to writers to inventors to civil rights champions and more, locally, nationally, and beyond. What’s Trending: Get the Lead Out

[https://chapelboromedia.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/04155631/Whats-Treading-864x329-1.png] Trending today: the discovery that major US-based companies are still producing lead-based products and selling them in other countries (Mexico, for instance), even though they’re generally banned here. Aaron initially calls on those other countries to take the initiative and pass anti-lead laws – but then remembers that public pressure campaigns also do actually work, sometimes. On Air Today: High School Poet Milagros Secena, Heading to ACT-SO Nationals

This Saturday, June 20, you’re invited to stop by TABLE on Main Street in Carrboro for a fundraiser event from 2-6 p.m. to help send two local high schoolers to Chicago for a national STEM and arts competition called ACT-SO [https://naacp.org/convention/act-so], hosted by the NAACP. Enjoy Mexican street food and donate to the cause! The two students are Skylar Mitchell of Chapel Hill High School and Milagros Lopez Secena of Carrboro High School – and Aaron welcomed Secena to the studio to discuss ACT-SO and read the powerful poem that won the regional competition. The Morning News: Budgets, Murals, Juneteenth, and the College World Series Final

In today’s news: Orange County Commissioners approve a budget, and UNC baseball advances to the College World Series final for the first time in 19 years – now just two wins away from their first-ever national championship. Also: a hit-and-run leaves two bicyclists injured; homeowners in rural Orange County take on a farm that’s been hosting big parties; a new mural is going up along 15/501 to replace the beloved Dean Smith mural that got torn down last year; and Chapel Hill and Carrboro team up to celebrate Juneteenth. What’s Trending: Mayflies As Big As My Arm

[https://chapelboromedia.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/04155631/Whats-Treading-864x329-1.png] Trending today: new scientific research that’s shedding new light on ancient giant bugs and why they’re not around anymore. (Turns out smaller bugs have an easier time evading predators.) Victor’s fascinated, albeit a little wigged out by the idea of enormous insects – though is that a scary thought because we instinctively hate all insects, or just because we’re not used to insects that large?
