Presented by CiNEOLA [https://www.cineo.la/] and BAVC Media [https://www.bavc.org/] as part of the Bay Area Media Maker Summit [https://www.bammsummit.org/] (BAMMS 2025) in San Francisco on August 17, 2025. A panel of local filmmakers discusses their unique perspectives and experiences making documentaries in the Bay Area as Latinx artists, and how they approach telling stories as part of an intersectional Latin American diaspora. Panelists shared recent work samples, followed by questions after a moderated discussion. Panelists: Emily Cohen Ibañez, Luca Capponi, Maya Cueva, Colette Ghunim Moderated by Daniel Díaz Filmed and edited by Javan Jiles Panelist bios: Colette Ghunim Colette’s soul purpose is to use the power of film and storytelling for those oppressed around the world to be seen, to be heard, and to heal. Her first documentary, The People’s Girls (2016), won Best Short Documentary at the Arab Film Festival. She is currently directing Traces of Home, her first feature-length film documenting her inner quest to find home through unearthing her parents’ forced migrations from Mexico and Palestine. Her work has been highlighted on international outlets such as Huffington Post, Al Jazeera, Univision, and TEDx. Emily Cohen Ibañez Emily’s films pair lyricism with social activism, advocating for environmental and labor justice. Her award-winning feature, Fruits of Labor, about a teenage farmworker, premiered at SXSW 2021 and aired on PBS POV. She is currently completing her short documentary RIVER, about competitive river rafters in the Colombian Amazon, and writing her first screenplay, From Honey to Ashes, supported by SFFILM's Rainin Grant. Her third feature documentary in progress, Orquidea, is about orchid protectors in Colombia. Luca Capponi Luca is an Italian-Ecuadorian filmmaker from a small village in the Bergamo province, Italy. Growing up in a bicultural environment, he developed an early curiosity about identity, migration, and the experiences of marginalized communities. He is a graduate of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC), Italy’s National School of Cinema. Luca is now based in Berkeley and currently working on Like Heaven Without God, a documentary that follows the lives of unhoused individuals living in an RV community. Maya Cueva Maya is a Latina award-winning director and producer from Berkeley, CA. She was a Netflix Nonfiction Director and Producer fellow and was also listed on DOC NYC’s 40 Under 40 Filmmakers, co-presented by HBO Documentary Films. Her work has been featured on The New Yorker, NPR’s All Things Considered, Latino USA, The Atlantic, Teen Vogue, and National Geographic. Her feature documentary, On the Divide, premiered in competition at Tribeca Film Festival in 2021. Maya is currently working on her second documentary feature film Rebel Without a Pause.

This episode features Bolivian filmmakers Miguel Hilari and Maria Mealla in conversation as they discuss Miguel’s documentary short film ‘Bocamina’ which is now showing on CiNEOLA [https://www.cineo.la/bocamina/]. About Bocamina: Potosí, a colonial mining town in Bolivia. At the pithole, faces of the workers leaving the mine. These faces, turned into still images, are looked at by children. Images of other times? About Miguel Hilari: Miguel Hilari studied film in La Paz, Santiago de Chile and Barcelona. His films “El corral y el viento” (2014), “Compañía” (2019) y “Bocamina” (2019) portray generational gaps, migration, indigenous identity and movement between the countryside and the city in Bolivia. They have been screened and received awards globally. Miguel has collaborated in the production of several independent Bolivian and Peruvian films. He currently teaches documentary film at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. About Maria Mealla: Maria Mealla was conjured in the Andes Mountains of Bolivia. She was raised by storytellers that encouraged her to pursue filmmaking, a path which eventually led her to the beautiful city by the bay. She ventured into movie-making in 2010 and learned the craft through work trade by collaborating with other talented filmmakers on their projects. Her latest film, Bring me an Avocado, premiered at Cinequest March 2019 and took home the Audience Award. It is currently still gathering positive reviews and awards in the film festival circuit. With her work, Maria strives to uplift and increase representation of the Latinx community in front of and behind the camera. When she is not working on narrative projects, Maria works as a video producer in the Bay Area at large. Her favorite foods are hot dogs and mashed potatoes and she is of average height. About Melisa Liebenthal: Melisa Liebenthal is an Argentinian-born film director and editor. In her work, she seeks to craft different forms of first-person narratives and uses a wide range of creative means. Her films have been awarded in International Film Festival Rotterdam, BAFICI and Punto de Vista and screened in New York Film Festival, Edinburgh IFF and Oberhausen Internationale Kurzfilmtage, amongst others. She is a Film graduate at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in France. She specialized in Editing and Dramatic Structure with award-winning professor Miguel Pérez in Argentina and in Essay-Film at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba. She currently lives between Berlin and Buenos Aires and works on different personal and commissioned projects as well as a freelance editor and director. About Isa Nakazawa: Isa Nakazawa is an Oakland-based writer, educator, and radio host. She currently works at the Bay Area Video Coalition [http://bavc.org/], a community media hub and resource for media makers in the Bay Area committed to cultivating equity in storytelling.
