This episode features Bolivian filmmakers Miguel Hilari and Maria Mealla in conversation as they discuss Miguel’s documentary short film ‘Bocamina’ which is now showing on CiNEOLA [https://www.cineo.la/bocamina/]. About Bocamina: Potosí, a colonial mining town in Bolivia. At the pithole, faces of the workers leaving the mine. These faces, turned into still images, are looked at by children. Images of other times? About Miguel Hilari: Miguel Hilari studied film in La Paz, Santiago de Chile and Barcelona. His films “El corral y el viento” (2014), “Compañía” (2019) y “Bocamina” (2019) portray generational gaps, migration, indigenous identity and movement between the countryside and the city in Bolivia. They have been screened and received awards globally. Miguel has collaborated in the production of several independent Bolivian and Peruvian films. He currently teaches documentary film at the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés. About Maria Mealla: Maria Mealla was conjured in the Andes Mountains of Bolivia. She was raised by storytellers that encouraged her to pursue filmmaking, a path which eventually led her to the beautiful city by the bay. She ventured into movie-making in 2010 and learned the craft through work trade by collaborating with other talented filmmakers on their projects. Her latest film, Bring me an Avocado, premiered at Cinequest March 2019 and took home the Audience Award. It is currently still gathering positive reviews and awards in the film festival circuit. With her work, Maria strives to uplift and increase representation of the Latinx community in front of and behind the camera. When she is not working on narrative projects, Maria works as a video producer in the Bay Area at large. Her favorite foods are hot dogs and mashed potatoes and she is of average height. The film focuses on Constanza’s meticulous and almost obsessive gestures. As the hours pass by, repetition and melancholy become increasingly heavy, until this apparently ordinary day cracks. About Melisa Liebenthal: Melisa Liebenthal is an Argentinian-born film director and editor. In her work, she seeks to craft different forms of first-person narratives and uses a wide range of creative means. Her films have been awarded in International Film Festival Rotterdam, BAFICI and Punto de Vista and screened in New York Film Festival, Edinburgh IFF and Oberhausen Internationale Kurzfilmtage, amongst others. She is a Film graduate at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and at Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in France. She specialized in Editing and Dramatic Structure with award-winning professor Miguel Pérez in Argentina and in Essay-Film at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba. She currently lives between Berlin and Buenos Aires and works on different personal and commissioned projects as well as a freelance editor and director. About Isa Nakazawa: Isa Nakazawa is an Oakland-based writer, educator, and radio host. She currently works at the Bay Area Video Coalition [http://bavc.org/], a community media hub and resource for media makers in the Bay Area committed to cultivating equity in storytelling. Outside of her work at BAVC, Isa hosts a radio show, Rhizomatic Radio [https://adp.fm/shows/rhizomatic-radio/], the 2nd & 4th Thursday of every month on ADP.FM [http://alldayplay.fm/] dedicated to her love of connecting listeners to the transformative power of music. Sobre ‘Tuyuku’: La leyenda de un milenario árbol que dio origen a Yosonuviko, el pueblo de las nubes, vuelve a la memoria de los lugareños a través de la antigua lengua de la lluvia, Sa’an Savi, para recodarles su endeble condición humana ante la inmensidad de la naturaleza. Metáfora de la vida a través del tiempo, que nos rememora la necesidad de convivir en equilibrio con la naturaleza. Sobre Nicolás Rojas Sánchez: Director, guionista y productor. En 2006 escribe y dirige “Snuu viko. El lugar de las nubes y algunas palabras perdidas”, docudrama condecorado con el Premio CDI en el 6o Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia en 2008. Director y co-guionista de “Música para después de dormir”, cortometraje producido por el Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía en 2013; y galardonado con el premio ARIEL que otorga la Academia Mexicana de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas en 2014. En 2018, bajo la producción de CONACULTA-FONCA, desarrolla el guión de ciencia ficción “Yutu” (Árbol), y filma el documental “Tuyuku” (Ahuehuete). Su guión “Bienvenido a Pueblo Viejo” recibió asesoría por medio del IMCINE y el laboratorio de historias en Morelia : Sundance 2018, actualmente bajo la producción de Animal de luz films. Sobre Verónica Aguilar: Lingüista en formación y mixteca nacida en Abasolo del Valle, Veracruz. Se especializa en adquisición de segundas lenguas, pero también ha profundizado en temas sobre derechos lingüísticos de los pueblos indígenas de México y su representación en internet. Con estudios en la Universidad Veracruzana y en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, se gana la vida como traductora de inglés y francés mientras realiza una “movilidad autofinanciada” para reaprender el mixteco, en San Juan Mixtepec, Oaxaca. Además, trabaja en un proyecto de documentación histórica de su comunidad y hace voluntariado en la red internacional Rising Voices, que busca dar voz a comunidades poco representadas. Sobre Omar Aguilar Sánchez: Omar Aguilar Sánchez, es tee savi (mixteco) y Doctor por la Universidad de Leiden. Cursó la Licenciatura en Arqueología en la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia y su tesis titulada “Límites y extensión territorial de Santo Tomás Ocotepeque: un asentamiento de principios de la época colonial en la Mixteca Alta oaxaqueña” ganó “Mención Honorífica” en los Premios INAH 2016 a la mejor tesis de licenciatura en arqueología en México. En 2019 fue galardonado por el Gobierno Mexicano con el Premio Nacional de la Juventud en la categoría de “Logro Académico”. Ideó y fue co-creador de la app “Códices Mixtecos”. Es co-fundador del “Colectivo Nchivi Ñuu Savi” (Gente del Pueblo de la Lluvia). Es participante en el proyecto Minority Languages, Major Opportunities. Collaborative Research, Community Engagement and lnnovative Educational Tools (COLING). Actualmente es becario de The Americas Research Network (ARENET). About ‘Hazte Sentir’: In 2018, Brazil’s first shelter for LGBTQ+ refugees opened its doors in the city of Manaus, the largest city of the state of Amazonas. This collaborative documentary film tells the story of three residents who are all trying to build a new life in this urban metropolis. About João Federici: João is the  director of programming and former executive/artistic director of the largest LGBTQ+ film festival in Latin America, MixBrasil, and the World Cinema Programmer/Latinx Community Liaison at the Mill Valley Film Festival. About Dieter Deswarte: Dieter is a documentary filmmaker based in London. He is a self-shooter and editor. His intimate approach leads to a low-intervention kind of filmmaking that captures human stories with sincerity, creativity and cinematic beauty. He is known for his approachable manner, genuine interest in a wide range of subject matters and dedication towards his practice and social values. He is a lecturer on the MA in ethnographic and documentary film at UCL. About Emilio Felix Sánchez Morón: Emilio is the Administrator at Casa Miga, a LGBTIQ+ shelter in the center of Manaus, Brazil that hosts refugees and Brazilians. They are supported by UNHCR and the United Nations Population Fund. Emilio has a degree in International Relations and is a graduate student in Human Rights, Ethnic Social Issues and Socio-Economic Diversity.
