Psalm 74 gives us the words to pray when we don't have them; when our circumstances are just too dire. Our God is the King from of Old, never forgetting His covenant people, so when life is in awful ruins, we must learn to pray from within our faith. This first prayer of a worship leader in Psalms Book III presents two problems: envying the arrogant and the prosperity of the wicked. This is contrasted with the promise that God gives good to those who are pure in heart, who are undivided in their devotion to God. Envy is a heart problem and leads to a transactional form of religion. Psalm 73 provides a solution to the two problems it presented and encourages readers to have an undivided heart.
