Know K1 Who do you most identify with in the story: Self-indulgent Ian or Self-righteous Richard? Grow G1 Dan said that self-indulgence and self-righteousness are “categories” of sins that cover most sins. Do you agree with this? List some sins: where would we “file” each sin, under which category? G2 Is one category harder to repent of than the other? If so, why do you think this might be? G3 Look back at Luke 11:1-3. Why is this context so important to the parable? G4 Dan said that this is the story of the Lost Sons. In what way did each son need to come home? Which son had the hardest journey home? Explain your answer. G5 How do you think the story ended? Do you think Self-Righteous Richard came back home or not? G6 What is the picture of the Father we get from this parable? What lie did each son believe about the Father? What truth did they need to believe to counteract the lie? Show S1 Think of your friends. Some will be more like Self-Righteous Richards. Others like Self-Indulgent Ians. Using your personal salvation story, think about how you can use it to speak to each of these kinds of people. --

How does this point to Jesus and the gospel? G4 Verses 6-7 call people to seek the Lord while He may be found. What does it mean to seek God, and how can we do that in our daily lives? G5 Verses 8-9 declare that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours. Can you share a time when God worked in a way you didn’t expect? Grow G1 Verse 6 states, “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” What does this verse teach about the relationship between faith and righteousness? G2 Abram expresses doubt in verses 2-3, questioning how God will fulfill His promise. What does this tell us about the nature of faith? G3 How does God respond to Abram’s doubt in verses 4-6? What does this reveal about God’s character? G4 Abram both doubts and believes—how can doubt and faith coexist? Have you ever experienced a similar paradox in your own faith journey? G5 Even after believing God’s promise, Abram still asks for reassurance in verse 8. What does this say about human nature and our need for confirmation? G6 How does God’s covenant ceremony (vv. 9-15) provide a tangible reassurance of His promise? Why might this physical sign have been necessary for Abram’s faith? Show S1 What are some practical ways we can hold onto belief even when we have doubts?
