ARTIST TALK Elefteria Vlavianos and Todd Fuller

Elefteria Vlavianos 'The Feeling of Memory' 2nd May to 23rd May Todd Fuller 'Simple Love' 2nd May to 16th May This conversation brings together Todd Fuller and Elefteria Vlavianos, to discuss two practices that, at first glance, sit quite apart, yet, in discussion, reveal a number of shared beliefs. Moving between drawing and material-based processes, both artists reflect on how their works begin, and the role that repetition, labour, and accumulation play in shaping meaning over time. What emerges is a dialogue around making as a way of thinking, where images are not singular or fixed, but built through layering, fragmentation, and return. Central to the conversation are questions of multiplicity and memory. Whether through the doubling of forms or the proliferation of images across a surface, both practices explore how meaning shifts when an image is repeated, extended, or reworked. Time becomes embedded in the work itself, held within the marks, the process, and the duration of making. Rather than drawing direct parallels, the discussion opens up a shared space between the two practices, one that is shaped by process, attention, and an ongoing negotiation between control and intuition.

Here, larger porcelain hemispheres invite new forms of interaction, their surfaces marked through a slow, tactile process of drawing on ceramic. Each line becomes a trace of movement, a record of time, and an echo of planetary rhythms. The meticulous process resists the immediacy of digital reproduction, transforming the ceramic surface into a site of reflection on presence, time, and space. Portable Hole shifts this lens to the overlooked surfaces of the urban environment. Through a combination of fine hand-drawn lines and laser-cut etchings on birch, the work captures the delicate fractures of pavements — small fissures that reveal hidden geographies shaped by time, wear, and the quiet force of nature. These circular forms evoke cycles of endurance and change, mapping the tension between the built environment and the natural elements breaking through. Together, these works present drawing as more than depiction: it is an embodied act of understanding. Whether tracing the vast motions of the cosmos or the smallest cracks underfoot, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how surface, line, and time intersect to reveal the narratives of place and presence.

Artist Talk with Andrew Nicholls at NAS Andrew Nicholls, a finalist in the 24th Dobell Drawing Prize presents an artist talk at the National Art School (NAS). Recorded live on 12th April 2025 offering insight into his practice and the work selected for this prestigious award.  Known for his meticulously detailed drawings, Nicholls explores themes of history and cultural exchange. This talk provides a unique opportunity to engage with his creative process and the broader dialogue surrounding contemporary drawing. ------------- Andrew Nicholls is one of Western Australia’s most renowned and beloved contemporary artists, celebrated for his high-baroque and high-camp drawings, ceramics and photography, in addition to his expansive site-responsive curatorial projects, which have drawn inspiration from heritage and museum sites across Western Australia, Italy and the United Kingdom. Nicholls’ work explores how power has been expressed through aesthetics during the past three thousand years of Western culture. In particular, his works draw attention to seemingly benign or trivial artistic or folk traditions that nonetheless reveal profound insight into the political, social and economic context from which emerged. In recent years, this has particularly included the history of Western Magick, as a highly-subversive force on the fringes of Western culture. The artist explains: “As a lapsed Catholic boasting over two decades as an agnostic-atheist, during the 2020 lockdowns I was some-what bemused to find myself re-establishing a spiritual practice, when I was drawn to begin performing ritual magick. For me, as with practitioners throughout history, this provided a profound space of composure and empowerment from which to enact change in a world that had seemingly descended into chaos.
