S2 - Episode 1 : From Germany to Nancy with Dr Tristan Ehrlich

In this new season of Behind the OR, we are very pleased to welcome Dr. Tristan Ehrlich who shares his journey from Germany to France and how it shaped his approach to aortic valve repair. Trained in Germany alongside leading experts, he developed a rigorous, structured vision of valve repair as both a technique and a philosophy. Now based in Nancy, he is actively building a standardized aortic valve repair program, combining surgical precision, team training, and continuous data evaluation. Dr. Ehrlich discusses the challenges of training abroad, the importance of fostering a “repair mindset,” and his ambition to establish Nancy as a leading center for innovation, research, and education in valve repair. This episode highlights how collaboration, discipline, and knowledge-sharing are key to making valve repair a new standard in cardiac surgery.   About the speaker Tristan Ehrlich graduated in 2016 as a medical doctor at the University of Lorraine – France. After that, he started his residency in cardiac surgery at the Saarland University with Prof. Schäfers. Currently he is a cardiac surgeon in Nancy Hospital (France). His area of interest are adult cardiac surgery with focus on aortic valve repair and aortic surgery. Dans cette nouvelle saison de Behind the OR, nous avons le plaisir d'accueillir le Dr Tristan Ehrlich revient sur son parcours de formation en Allemagne et sur la manière dont cette expérience a façonné sa vision de la réparation valvulaire aortique. Formé aux côtés d’experts de référence, il y a acquis une approche rigoureuse et structurée, faisant de la réparation valvulaire bien plus qu’une technique : une véritable philosophie. Aujourd’hui à Nancy, il développe un programme standardisé de réparation valvulaire, fondé sur la précision chirurgicale, la formation des équipes et l’analyse continue des résultats. Il partage également les défis de la formation à l’international, l’importance de diffuser une “culture de la réparation” et son ambition de faire de Nancy un centre de référence en matière d’innovation, de recherche et d’enseignement. Un épisode inspirant qui met en lumière le rôle essentiel de la collaboration, de la rigueur et du partage des connaissances pour faire de la réparation valvulaire un nouveau standard en chirurgie cardiaque.   A propos de l'orateur Tristan Ehrlich a obtenu son diplôme de médecine en 2016 à l'Université de Lorraine, en France. Il a ensuite commencé son internat en chirurgie cardiaque à l'Université de la Sarre, sous la direction du professeur Schäfers. Il est actuellement Chirurgien Cardiaque au CHU de Nancy (France). Il s'intéresse particulièrement à la chirurgie cardiaque chez l'adulte, notamment à la réparation de la valve aortique et à la chirurgie aortique. Dr. Bleri Celmeta is a cardiac surgeon operating on the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Unit in Galeazzi-Sant'Ambrogio Hospital (Milan, Italy). He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padova-Italy in 2014, then completed his residency program in Cardiac Surgery in the same university in 2020. His professional background included also a fellowship in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery in the University Hospital of Nantes-France (2019-2020).   He is the author of numerous publications and conference presentations with particular interest in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and review editor of various international Journals (Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, Frontiers in Surgery, Innovations: Technology and Techniques in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, among others). Après 20 années d’expatriation en France, entre Paris, les Antilles-Guyane et Toulouse, le Dr Hassan DEBBAGH, Chirurgien cardio-vasculaire, a décidé d’exercer au Maroc, son pays d’origine. Entre légitimité et challenge, le grand saut dans l’inconnu ne s’est pas fait attendre : composer une équipe et proposer ses compétences dans ce qui pourrait être considéré comme un désert médical dans sa spécialité lui tenait réellement à cœur. Sa première intervention se focalisera sur les raisons l’ayant amené à prendre cette décision de vie, puis les différents aspects qu’il aura dû considérer dans son approche d’un environnement médico-social, qui n’avait certainement pas attendu son retour pour évoluer.  Le Dr Hassan DEBBAGH est passionné de chirurgie valvulaire conservatrice, de chirurgie aortique, d’assistance circulatoire et de transplantation. Il a fait partie de l’unité mobile d’assistance circulatoire des Antilles Françaises et a été vice-président de l’association des jeunes chirurgiens thoraciques et cardiovasculaires français.
