002: The Vanishing Self

Japanese sushi masters and American skateboarders don't appear in the same conversation very often. One tradition is ancient, formal, wrapped in centuries of Zen philosophy. The other is young, loud, and invented in empty swimming pools. But when you look at what is actually happening inside the person doing the work, both traditions converge on the same strange experience: the self gets quiet, the ego dissolves, the practice takes over.
