Guilt says I did something wrong. Shame says I am something wrong. That difference is everything — and it is why shame does not go away when you clean up your act, improve your behavior, or finally get things together. Shame is not attached to what you did. It is attached to who you believe you are. In this episode, Raymond Smith gets honest about one of the most painful seasons of his life. He was twenty-one years old when he married someone for the wrong reason — not love, but the belief that she was the only one who would ever want him. Eighteen months after their son was born, she left. He was twenty-three years old, divorced, a single father, and the first person in his entire family to have a marriage end. And for the first time in his life, he stopped arguing with the verdict. He believed it completely. But shame did not start with Raymond's story. It started in a garden. And understanding where it came from changes everything about how you fight it.
