It’s 24 sheets of paper (7″ x 5.5″) folded in half and stapled, with a glossy/smooth plastic-feeling outer layer. They’ll fit in your pocket and are way more convenient than large-bulky notebooks. 1:35:25 – “Those are the same ones I have..” Here’s what they look like: [http://i.imgur.com/jpvkuJs.jpg] 1:35:40 – Aaron Draplin > “Aaron Draplin is a graphic designer, author and founder of Draplin Design Co. His book, Pretty Much Everything, is a mid-career survey of his work including case studies and advice which was released in May 2016.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Draplin [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Draplin] Aaron Draplin is an amazing person, and an exceptional teacher. I’ve watched hundreds of graphic design tutorials and my favorite by-far, is a 20-minute video of him showing how to design a logo from start-to-finish. His book, which is available on Amazon, has a nearly 100% 5-star rating on every reviewing website—including Goodreads, which is notorious for giving tough reviews. I’m only halfway through it atm but it’s a great book! 1:36:04 – “I think he had a square” A square is a cheap little device that plugs into your phone and allows you to swipe credit cards. Bansky setup a stand and had an old man sit there and try to sell his paintings. A low-end Bansky painting sells for roughly $200,000. Watch how many people politely walk past it without realizing how much the paintings are really worth. 2:30:02 – “Like Arabic or Farsi” Farsi is another name for Persian. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_language] 2:31:09 – “At the end of each episode I ask each guest if they have a shout-out they’d like to give.” (This reference is a place marker) 2:32:37– “So my shout-out is to…” > So my shout-out is to all those wanna-be entrepreneurs, or people that have an idea of a start-up, or even who want to go and travel the world… or move to Australia and get a job. There’s people who have really big dreams either in travel or entrepreneurship. This shout-out’s to you. There’s just so many resources, so much opportunity. If you’re hearing this, you’re probably in the states, or you’re in a place where it’s easy to get access to technology. If we have that, you can start anything. You can find free resources for travel, or starting your idea. You can go out and speak to someone about travel or starting up your idea. There’s so many people in both of these sectors that really want to help out the next generation of travelers, or entrepreneurs, or both. That they’re really willing to give as much mentorship, free advice, any sort of guidance to anyone who wants to do it. Cause I know I am, and anybody else who’s in my space is as well. We really wanna help anybody out there that hasn’t done it yet to really go and do it. And no matter how big or wild your dream is, it really is possible—it’s just like we said, getting one step at a time. Putting down one brick. So if you ever need any advice or help, reach out to anybody in your community, an entrepreneur, myself. I know all of us would be happy to help. 2:32:49 – “Well I can email you later and you can give me a list of some of the more valuable resources these entrepreneurs can access?” I emailed him about this, and here’s is the response he gave me: > There’s a million resources for people starting out; Best advice is just to get into the religion of finding out what’s going on in the startup world; Frequent www.Techcrunch.com [http://www.Techcrunch.com]; Check Startland News [http://www.startlandnews.com/] for local startup news; get in touch with local entrepreneurs via Linkedin [https://www.linkedin.com/], going to Sprint Accelerator events (or similar events in every city in the country); watch YouTube videos of successful entrepreneurs and Accelerator people in your space (for me, watching numerous videos of Brian Chesky, Sam Altman, Gary Vaynerchuk, etc. have been key to me figuring out how to get going). 2:34:07 – “Do you have a way that listeners can get in touch with you?” > All social media handles are under “2020Adventures” or “ByePal”. You can reach me directly on my email, Spencer@2020Adventures@gmail.com. And you can text me, or call me as well, 816-986-7538. https://www.facebook.com/2020adventures [https://www.facebook.com/2020adventures] 2:34:27 – “So to summarize your shout-out, just get out there and act on your entrepreneurial spirit?” > Right! Act on it. Go and put something really shitty out there, and get some advice. Get some advice from someone who’s done it really well—use your resources by listening to podcasts, or looking at Youtube videos from really successful entrepreneurs. 2:34:28 – “There’s entrepreneur podcasts I’m sure..” http://www.inc.com/rhett-power/the-15-best-podcasts-for-entrepreneurs.html [http://www.inc.com/rhett-power/the-15-best-podcasts-for-entrepreneurs.html] https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/240202 [https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/240202] CHALLENGE: > This episode challenge is go out and notice the things that are around you in your life, that up until this challenge you had not made an effort to notice. It’s so easy to get distracted these days, and the result is that we miss much of what goes on around us. In fact, we’re so distracted that we often don’t even realize that we’ve missed anything. Our thoughts are either on the future and what’s next, or… we’re analyzing the past. We’re not truly living in the present moment. So what do I mean by this challenge? Well… let me give you an example. There’s this walk that I like to do in my neighborhood—I’ve been doing it for about 5 years now. And I’ve done this walk hundreds of times, usually with a friend of mine. But somehow, just a few months ago, I was taking that very same walk and I noticed this really cool building that I’d never noticed before. It was a 3-door garage with hobbit doors, instead of the traditional square garage doors. Something that I totally should have noticed on one of my previous walks. But somehow, I never did. The truth is, we all have things like that garage, that have always been there. and are seemingly obvious, but that we’ve somehow never noticed. I believe that doing this challenge will help give you some awareness over your lack of awareness. There’s no real excuse for not doing this challenge. It doesn’t need to take more than 5 minutes. If you’re lazy it can be done by sitting down, or walking around slowly in your backyard or your neighborhood. If for some reason you can’t leave the house, it can even be done on Google maps. But I encourage you to invest some real time with this challenge. The longer you do it, the you’ll receive from it. If you have any cool ideas for a future challenges, send them to Feedback@GrowthOrigin.com [Feedback@GrowthOrigin.com]. It’s an absolutely terrible feeling and I wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy. Here’s a screenshot I took of a Youtube commenter describing de-realization that’s pretty spot-on. [http://i.imgur.com/gb8XICs.jpg] In short, you essentially feel very detached from your entire reality. Everything around you seems like fake two-dimensional Hollywood props. You don’t see an entire room, you see and feel everything separate from one another. It feels almost like your whole life was taken from under you and your world was replaced with a simulator, like the Matrix. De-personalization is the same thing, except with people. Everyone around you seems so artificial. Imagine if Neo was taken out of the real world and placed in the Matrix, and he knew it was the Matrix, but he’s stuck there for eternity. The feelings he would experience are de-personalization and de-realization. To learn more about this, just go to YouTube and search both of those phrases. Lots of people who are currently experiencing it, or have previously experienced it, discuss what it’s like and how long it took for it to go away. 31:05 – “Well on the other end of the spectrum…” It was Warren Buffet who used to sell magazines door-to-door. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101000052 [http://www.cnbc.com/id/101000052] Also, check this out: [http://i.imgur.com/lIKlKPU.jpg] 31:11 – “[Einstein didn’t do well in school]” “When he was very young, Einstein’s parents worried that he had a learning disability because he was very slow to learn to talk.” http://www.history.com/topics/einsteins-life-facts-and-fiction [http://www.history.com/topics/einsteins-life-facts-and-fiction] This article says that Einstein himself disputed the myth that he was bad at math as a child. http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1936731_1936743_1936758,00.html [http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1936731_1936743_1936758,00.html] 31:22 – “Divinci had severe dyslexia” Unknown. There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision. 18:26 – “During the Iraq War, I was listening on Sunday Morning program… Tom Delay had written a book about his perception of the Iraq War.” [I requested the source from her and will update this if/when I receive it] 18:36 – “Chuck Shumer was on one of the morning shows with Tom, and he looked right at Tom and he said, ‘You sir, are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own set of facts’.”[I requested the source from her and will update this if/when I receive it] 19:23- “One person dies every 20 minutes from Oxycotin overdose.” The only thing I could find was that one person dies every 19 minutes. This came from a CNN article. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and CNN’s chief medical correspondent interviewed Gary Franklin, a medical director for Washington state’s Department of Labor and Industries. CNN quoted him as saying this: > The most common scenario, he said, involves a man in his 40s or 50s who visits a doctor with a backache and walks out with a pain pill prescription. About three years later, typically, the man dies in his sleep from taking too many pills, or mixing them with alcohol. They don’t intend to die, but more than 20,000 times a year — every 19 minutes, on average — that is exactly what happens. CBD oil does not contain THC, and cannot get you ‘high’, but it does offer medical benefits: On May 1, 2014, the Missouri House (136-12) and Senate (unanimous) passed CBD-only legislation. The bill directs the state’s Department of Agriculture to set up a system for non-profit applicants to produce the oil under Health and Senior Services guidelines. Patients who suffer from seizures must prove that other treatment regimens have failed. On July 18, Gov. Jay Nixon signed the bill, making Missouri the 11th state to legalize CBD oil. Smoking marijuana places THC, the psychoactive chemical within marijuana, directly into the blood stream via the lungs. However, when ingesting marijuana, the chemical makes its way into the stomach, and gets processed in liver. The liver changes the cannabinoid THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is more potent. 11-Hydroxy-THC creates an entirely different effect on the body, and is frequently report as discomforting or unfavorable, whereas the effects of THC are often reported as very relaxing. Smoking marijuana gets you high very quickly and effects last anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours. Eating marijuana can generate effects lasting anywhere from 6 to 10 hours. It’s worst headache you’ll ever experience in your entire life. What happens is your cells soak up all the water like a sponge and begin to swell. Delores and myself both fell victim to this misconception as well. There is currently more research done into Cannabis than most drugs. This research is conducted in states where it’s legal and in the University of Mississippi, a university which has Federal approval to grow and study cannabis. Here’s an excerpt from Paul Armentano’s slide presentation at that conference. Paul Armentano is the Deputy Director of NORML: A search on PubMed, the repository for all peer-reviewed scientific papers, using the term “marijuana” yields nearly 20,000 scientific papers referencing the plant and/or its constituents, nearly half of which have been published just within the past decade. By comparison, a keyword search using the term “Tylenol” yields 17,370 published papers. A keyword search using the term “ibuprofen’ yields 10,500 published paper. A keyword search using the term “Ritalin” yields 7,012 published papers, and a keyword search using the term “hydrocodone” yields only 630 published papers. 1:29:32 – “I think it’s called ‘The Emporer Wears No Clothes..” The Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer. http://www.amazon.com/The-Emperor-Wears-Clothes-Conspiracy/dp/1878125028 [http://www.amazon.com/The-Emperor-Wears-Clothes-Conspiracy/dp/1878125028] On Amazon it’s #1 for the category “Wild plant gardening.” > Edit: I’ve since read this book and it’s by far one of the best books on the subject of Cannabis. What is Reefer Madness? It’s an anti-marijuana cult classic film. It’s also notorious for being one of the worst films of all time. I watched it for the Cannabis episode and I can say with certainty that it’s the worst film I have ever watched. It portrays marijuana as a dangerous drug that provokes; insanity, a desire to rape, murder, hit-and-run, extreme addiction, dishonesty, and suicide. Here’s the full film on Youtube (message me if this video goes down): 2:11:30 – Nancy Grace, “People are injecting marijuana… and will kill whole families..” Actual quote: “People on pot shoot, stab and strangle each other.” Btw, the joke is that people can’t “Inject” marijuana. Nancy Grace was so ignorant on marijuana that any video of her talking about marijuana instantly got millions of views due to educated individuals sharing the video in complete disbelief. It wasn’t long before a TV network snatched her up for the views she gathered and gave her a show where she did nothing but blast stupid nonesense and misconceptions about marijuana. She was infamous for censoring knowledgeable guests (she frequently cut mics), sided with anyone who sided against marijuana (even if they were wrong), and several other cringe-worthy methods of ignorance. 2:16:34 – The Don Bradley article was discussed again. Personal Facebook Account: https://www.facebook.com/clandestine.cow [https://www.facebook.com/clandestine.cow] CHALLENGE: This episodes challenge is to… Join an advocacy group. It would be awesome if you chose a medical marijuana advocacy group, because the movement does need people, but any group will do. Explore the world and discover what these advocacy groups have to offer. You’ll often find that they have a lot to offer in the way of friendship and knowledge. If you have a cool idea for a future challenge to give listeners, send them to feedback@growthorigin.com [feedback@growthorigin.com]. If you have any questions regarding this episode just ask in the comments section below! UPDATES TO THIS STORY: – (11/24/2015) Gene unfortunately passed away on Thanksgiving morning laying in bed next to his wife Dolores. – (12/5/2015) Gene Halbin had a wonderful funeral service. His family told great stories and they played “Another one bites the dust” by Queen at the end of his service. – (12/22/2015) I went to Dolores’s court case, but it was prolonged. The judge needed time to think over his decision and to refer to previous cases of a similar nature. Also, the prosecutor just so happened to be the most uneducated individual I had ever encountered. He knew absolutely nothing about the nature of cannabis and it’s uses. – (1/15/2016) Dolores just received the verdict of “Guilty” today in court for charges of possession for her husbands plants. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to the trial today so I don’t have very much information. I will add additional updates as I receive information. Here is a quote directly from his autobiography: “After some inquiry, I found a poor, industrious man, who was willing to undertake keeping the pavement clean, by sweeping it twice a week, carrying off the dirt from before all the neighbours’ doors, for the sum of sixpence per month, to be paid by each house. I then wrote and printed a paper setting forth the advantages to the neighbourhood that might be obtain’d by this small expense; the greater ease in keeping our houses clean, so much dirt not being brought in by people’s feet; the benefit to the shops by more custom, etc., etc., as buyers could more easily get at them; and by not having, in windy weather, the dust blown in upon their goods, etc., etc. I sent one of these papers to each house, and in a day or two went round to see who would subscribe an agreement to pay these sixpences; it was unanimously sign’d, and for a time well executed. All the inhabitants of the city were delighted with the cleanliness of the pavement that surrounded the market, it being a convenience to all, and this rais’d a general desire to have all the streets paved, and made the people more willing to submit to a tax for that purpose.” 27:09 “I think it was in the 1950’s, there was this immense flood” The flood hit in 1951. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Flood_of_1951 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Flood_of_1951] 28:31 – “The Kansas City Spirit” by Norman Rockwell. And I said “It seems almost louder in there”, again I can hear the background noise much louder because of the way my equipment is setup. ???? – At one point a Reddit post about Little Caesars throwing out fresh pizzas was mentioned: I didn’t manage to get the exact time on this reference, but here’s the link. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2eqsq3/iama_little_caesars_employee_today_we_released/ck214eb [http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2eqsq3/iama_little_caesars_employee_today_we_released/ck214eb] If you find the exact time for this reference please notify me via the comments section and I’ll fix this ASAP!
