Sydney Watergate- The Anatomy of a Crisis

#Sydneywatergate- The Anatomy of a Crisis The Lane Cove Council area, North Ryde and other lower north shore suburbs was impacted by a majorSydney Water [https://www.sydneywater.com.au/]outage that left some locals unable to shower or flush their toilets for up to four days. The issue started on Saturday 10 September 2022 and was resolved on 14 September 2022, TheSydney Water [https://www.sydneywater.com.au/]crews worked around the clock, and once they realised they could not quickly fix the burst water pipe, they had to take steps to reroute the water to other pipes to restore water to impacted locals. The main problem is thatSydney Water [https://www.sydneywater.com.au/]did not communicate this to the public. The problem first started at around 6.45 am on Saturday, 10 September 2022. A water main burst so loudly it sounded like an explosion, and water started gushing onto Epping Road. Traffic on Epping Road was a nightmare, and some Lane Cove locals told ITC that they were stuck in traffic for over 2 hours on Saturday. The traffic congestion only got worse on Monday morning when everyone was returning to work, and as the bus lane was flooded, Sydney buses were also impacted. Sydney Water’s Managing Director, Roch Cheroux, said the replacement of the damaged pipe was complex, and crews worked around the clock to return normal water supply as soon as possible. “This was not an ordinary water main break. Crews have told me it’s one of the largest blow-outs they’ve ever seen and that the impact of the break was so powerful, it created a 12 metre long, seven-metre deep and 10-metre wide excavation site.” “This was a complex and unfolding situation. The size and scale of this event and the full extent of how widespread the incident was on our customers changed rapidly over the course of the weekend,” Mr Cheroux said. Jacky Barker from In the Cove will be speaking to a cross section of people from local business, residents, and locals involved in the political process (at both state and local level). How were they impacted and what did we learn? episode Tofugate and Events are back!! artwork
Tofugate and Events are back!!

Welcome to the In The Cove Podcast – it has been a while but we are back, back, back. ITC has been very busy keeping our loyal readers up to date on all things COVID-19, Events, and Lane Cove Council news.  It has been a very active period for Lane Cove Council with three meetings in the first two months of the year. At the March 2022 meeting, TOFUgate popped up.  What is TOFUgate? Greens Councillor Rochelle Flood asked Lane Cove Council to consider options to reduce meat consumption and promote plant-based alternatives at Council functions and events, as well as in Council managed facilities, to improve environmental, as well as human health and animal welfare outcomes.  Just as a side note ITC was at a Lane Cove Council workshop only a few weeks ago and one of the participants remarked that there were no vegetarian options provided. Councillor Flood made it clear that the notice of motion was to ensure that there were options for vegetarians and vegans at council events and it was not an attempt to remove meat from the menu.  Councillor Flood stated numerous times it is about having options. The motion had an extended discussion after Councillor Bennison asked three questions and moved the following amendment: “An amendment was moved by Councillors Bennison and Brooks-Horn that Council undertake consultation with the community to determine if they would like plant-based proteins included in catering for all Council events and venues.” During his speech in support of the amendment, he referred to UK literature about Tofu being no good for developing brains and making them smaller. ITC has done an extensive literature search and cannot find anything to back this up.   ITC has written to Councillor Bennison and asked him to provide a link to the research he cited – we have not received a reply. He also stated he was not keen on “farting cows causing climate change”. Councillor Bennison’s amendment motion was lost.  The original motion was carried with a unanimous vote. After we published our article on TOFUgate, we were contacted by Andrew May (who grew up in Lane Cove and is part of the famous May family).  He is now working with V2 food. In our podcast we speak to Andrew about what is plant-based protein, and it is not just TOFU.   Andrew May is the chief Taste-a-tarian & Chief Growth Officer at v2food We are on the run down to the Easter vacations and ITC will have all your Easter news and information on what’s happening around Lane Cove (and most importantly where can you get that coffee fix on Good Friday and Easter Sunday). Help Lane Cove raise some money for those who have been impacted by the floods. episode ITC - Still in Lockdown artwork
ITC - Still in Lockdown

Welcome to our podcast. Today we will be discussing how to find out about COVID19 Local information. We also talk to In the Cove's running expert Andy Smith from North Shore Outdoor Running and Fitness.  He has some brilliant tips on how to exercise in our own LGA. Locally Acquired Cases You can find out about locally acquired COVID19 cases by visiting this site published by NSW Health. The Lane Cove LGA, includes all suburbs with a 2066 postcode and Greenwich. These stats do not include that part of Lane Cove North located in Willoughby City Council (for those who live on the Mowbray school side of Mowbray Road). This data is all COVID19 cases recorded for people living in the Lane Cove LGA of locally acquired cases in the last four weeks. The tables show the location of residence by Local Government Area (LGA) or local health district (LHD) of locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the last four weeks. It is based on the date the person first developed symptoms. When no date of symptom onset is available (it is either under investigation by public health staff or the person tested positive without showing symptoms), the date of the positive test is used. Infections are not always acquired in the place of residence as people often travel outside their area for many reasons (e.g. work, school and shopping). Cases without a NSW residential address and people who were exposed interstate or overseas are not shown. Case counts may vary over time due to ongoing investigations and case reviews. Source:https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/stats-local.aspx [https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/stats-local.aspx] Active Cases You can find the active cases here. [https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/find-the-facts-about-covid-19?fbclid=IwAR0AsdMvD7VPXuQhhqXZOAH6cp3eHQJwTnh_gQEXWfFqXGpHAl6G8TFVB8w] Vaccination Stats There are appointments available at local pharmacies for the AZ vaccine. Burns Bay Medical Practices, Lane Cove Doctors, and Lane Cove Family Medical Practice are also now offering Pfizer. Get jabbed soon. Lane Cove LGA has the 7th highest vaccination rate (Ku ring gai Council is number one). NSW Health has now published Vaccination rates by LGA. A Link to the stats here. [https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/eligibility?lang=en] There are also various other tools available such as Covid Queue [https://covidqueue.com/] and Covid-19 Near me [https://covid19nearme.com.au/state/nsw/vaccination] – which show you vaccinations and testing locations and availability. Mask Up Just a reminder to mask up and scan in. We have been advised that one apartment block in Lane Cove has two positive COVID19 CASES in their block. Their body corporate has sent emails to all the residents and is keeping them up to date on what is happening. All common areas have been deep cleaned. 50% of Lane Cove lives in apartments, and it is so important that when you are in common areas, you wear your mask and comply with lift restrictions. Also, get vaccinated. Lane Cove has a great vaccination rate, but it can be improved. If you have a relative over 60 who has not been vaccinated, please ask them to speak to their doctor about getting vaccinated and let them know there are many places where they can be vaccinated locally. However, we have been contacted by locals who have been impacted financially by the lockdown during this lockdown, and both income earners have lost their jobs. We have referred them to Sydney Community Services who run a food bank. Sydney Community Services [https://www.sydneycs.org/] would like Lane Cove residents to know the following: "Supporting our Community The current lockdown is taking its toll on everyone.
