Descripción

We've been meaning to cover the films coming out of Cannes, but haven't had time due to very busy weeks of new releases. This week is no exception, but we will drop three names of films we'll be discussing in more detail down the line when they get their eventual official U.S. release. As for this week's movies, we start out with notice about a special 4K theatrical screening of anime classic "Tekkonkinkreet"; A24's anticipated "The Backrooms" finally hits theaters; hallucinogenic indie "Lucid" in limited release; Bleeding Skull rediscovers lost "Carnival of Souls" cousin "House of Dreams." And a good number of Blu-ray debuts: queer oddity "Holy Trinity"; Radu Jude's unashamedly A.I.-enhanced "Dracula"; Jan Svankmajer's "Faust"; the super-weird "She Loved Blossoms More"; and dated cult classic "7 Faces of Dr. Lao."ERRATA AND OMISSIONS:*Greg couldn't remember the big stars of Quentin Dupieux's upcoming "Full Phil": they are Woody Harrelson and Kristen Stewart.

Pod 366, Ep. 174: Linus O'Brien on Rocky Horror's Strange Journey, and a LOT of new releases (Video)

With a record number of new releases (14!) to cover this week, this is one of our longest episodes. It's capped by a chat with Linus O'Brien, son of "Rocky Horror Picture Show" creator Richard O'Brien, about his new documentary "Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror." The new releases are: Guy Maddin's "Careful" restoration and re-release; art-house experiment "Mare's Nest" in limited release; Criterion Collection releases of John Waters' "Desperate Living" and "Hairspray"; "Malpertuis" on Blu-ray for the first time; Crispin Glover in "Mr. K"; Julia Ducournau's "Alpha"; Blu-ray collections from outsider artists Kati Kelli and David "The Rock" Nelson; the surreal "Dogra Magra"; Jean Rollin's "The Nude Vampire"; a Roman Porno reboot box set featuring Sion Sono's "Antiporno"; and new discs of catalog titles "Weirdsville" and "What Dreams May Come." Then, with Linus O'Brien, we discuss growing up with a musician father, Rocky fans, neurodivergence, and dimly-lit restaurants in Los Angeles.ERRATA/OMISSIONS *The Hungarian all-child adaptation of "The Tragedy of Man" was "The Annunciation," not "Ascension."*The Rollin movie with clowns Greg meant to mention was "Requiem for a Vampire," not "Lust for a Vampire"

Pod 366, Ep. 172: Matador Bolero's Jonathan Rosado (and a little smoking) (VIDEO)

On this week's show, we talk to musician-turned-filmmaker Jonathan Rosado (The Suede Hello) about his now-in-theaters Super-8 experiment "Matador Bolero." But first, we cover the week's news and new releases: an upcoming new score for "The Holy Mountain" by rock band Zen Mother; psychedelic thriller "Wetiko" reaches VOD; Danish animation "The Trouble with Terkel" shows 6th graders behaving badly (including by rapping); 1970s Soviet sci-fi mystery "Dead Mountaineer's Hotel" spoiled; Tarsem Singh's surreal serial killer procedural "The Cell" in 4K. Then, Jonathan Rosado talks "Bolero," burlesque, and bagels. Surgeon General's Warning: Smoking isn't cool and will kill you. Vaping is cooler, but still uncool. ERRATA/OMISSIONS*Here's a major error: the Zen Mother rescore of "Holy Mountain" isn't upcoming, but, in fact, is from 2017.*Alloy Orchestra's first fully-scored silent film soundtrack was released in 1995.*Queen was not on Giorgio Moroder's "Metropolis" soundtrack, but Freddie Mercury appeared solo. Lou Reed was not on the soundtrack.*"Dead Mountaineer's Hotel" is from 1979, not 1976.
