Descripción

In this final episode of our three-part series, Creating a Home Our Kids Want to Return To, we are stepping back and remembering the long view of motherhood. So often, motherhood can feel like the moment right in front of us. The spilled drink. The hard attitude. The sibling conflict. The child who needs us again when we already feel stretched thin. But motherhood is not only about getting through today. We are not just raising children. We are raising future adults, future husbands and wives, future mothers and fathers, and future families. When we remember that, it can change the way we respond. Control may feel easier in the moment. It may even stop a behavior quickly. But connection, steadiness, and emotional safety are what form something lasting in the hearts of our children. In this episode, we talk about how the long view helps us slow down, invite the Spirit, and see our children not only as they are today, but as they are becoming. We also reflect on how our example in motherhood, marriage, repentance, regulation, and grace can bless generations beyond what we can see right now. This is slow work. It is holy work. And it matters. In This Episode, We Talk About: * Why we are not just raising kids, but future adults * How remembering who our children are becoming can change the way we respond * Why connection matters more than control * How our example can shape future marriages and families * The importance of regulating ourselves before reacting * How scripture, prayer, and the Spirit help us see the long view * Why small, unseen moments in motherhood matter more than we often realize * How this three-part series fits together: connection, emotional safety, and the long view A Gentle Invitation for This Week Choose one moment each day to pause before you respond. Take a breath. Soften your shoulders. Remember the long view. Then ask yourself: “What does this moment teach my child about love, safety, and belonging?” It does not have to be perfect. It only has to be practiced. Resources Mentioned * For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay * Charlotte Mason’s reminder that children are persons * President Henry B. Eyring’s story about remembering the future man inside the child Closing Encouragement You are cultivating something beautiful, even on the days that feel messy or ordinary. You are shaping hearts. You are building future homes. You are creating a place your children will want to return to. And that is legacy. That is truthfulness. That is motherhood refined.

029 | July Book Club on Heroism

July Book Club: The Life-Giving Home — A Heroic Heritage In this July book club episode of Refining Our Focus in Motherhood, we continue our journey through The Life-Giving Home and reflect on the chapter “A Heroic Heritage.” This conversation invites mothers to think about the stories we tell, the heroes we celebrate, the memories we preserve, and the kind of courage we are quietly shaping in our homes. We talk about imagination, literature, family history, faith, and the everyday ways we help our children see that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Whether we are reading aloud, sharing family stories, talking about scripture heroes, explaining traditions, or simply noticing what captures our children’s hearts, we are helping shape their identity, imagination, and faith. Key Takeaways 1. Our children’s imaginations matter. The heroes, stories, songs, movies, books, and conversations that fill our homes help shape what our children admire and what they begin to imagine for their own lives. 2. Heroism begins in ordinary life. Courage and faithfulness are not formed only in big moments. They are built through small, repeated choices, family rhythms, and the everyday atmosphere of the home. 3. We can be intentional about what enters our homes. Not every book, show, or story needs to be heavy or serious, but we can thoughtfully choose stories that point our children toward goodness, sacrifice, courage, creativity, and faith. 4. Family history gives children roots. Sharing stories about where we come from helps our children understand that they are part of a larger story. Even if parts of our family history are painful, we can choose to create new patterns and tell a new story going forward. 5. Mothers help shape memory, imagination, identity, and faith. The books we read, the songs we sing, the stories we tell, the scriptures we open, and the traditions we explain all become part of the culture we are building in our homes. This Week’s Invitation We invite listeners to ask their family one simple question: What kind of hero do you want to be? Then choose one small way to bring heroic memory into your home this week. Reflection Questions 1. What kinds of heroes, stories, books, movies, or songs are currently shaping the imagination of your children? 2. What is one story from scripture, history, literature, or your own family history that you could share with your children this week? 3. Are there any family rhythms, traditions, or memories you want to be more intentional about preserving? 4. What kind of courage do you hope your children are learning through the atmosphere of your home? 5. What is one small, simple way you can help your children see that they are part of God’s bigger story?   Simple Action Step This week, ask your family: What kind of hero do you want to be? You could ask this around the dinner table, during family scripture study, after reading a story, or after watching a movie together. Then choose one small way to bring heroic memory into your home. You could: * Read a scripture story * Share a family story * Memorize a verse or poem * Talk about a historical figure * Explain the meaning behind a holiday or family tradition * Choose a read-aloud with characters who show courage, sacrifice, or goodness The goal is not to create a perfect lesson. The goal is to help your children see that they are part of a bigger story and that their choices matter.   Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/refiningourfocus/] Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/refiningourfocus] Refining Our Focus - Finding Happiness Through Simple Living [https://refiningourfocus.com/]

episode 028 | When the Ordinary Becomes Sacred artwork

028 | When the Ordinary Becomes Sacred

Monotony doesn't mean meaningless. Have you ever reached the end of the day and wondered if anything you did really mattered? The dishes are done (again), the laundry is folded (for now), dinner has been made, and bedtime routines are complete—only to wake up and do it all over again tomorrow. In this episode of Refining Our Focus in Motherhood, we're talking about one of the greatest lies mothers often believe: that repetitive work has little value. But God often does His greatest work through ordinary, faithful obedience. Together, we'll explore how the everyday rhythms of motherhood—making meals, cleaning the home, comforting little hearts, reading one more bedtime story, and simply showing up day after day—are quietly shaping your children, strengthening your family, and creating a Christ-centered home they'll long to return to. Using Galatians 6:9, we discuss why God calls us to "not be weary in well doing," and how faithfulness in the small things produces an eternal harvest we may not see for years. In this episode, we discuss: * Why motherhood can feel repetitive—and why that isn't a bad thing. * The lie that only big accomplishments have lasting value. * How daily routines build trust, security, and connection. * Seeing God's hand in the ordinary moments. * Practical ways to shift your perspective when motherhood feels monotonous. * Encouragement for the mom who wonders if what she's doing really matters. Scripture Galatians 6:9 "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."   Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/refiningourfocus/] Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/refiningourfocus] Refining Our Focus - Finding Happiness Through Simple Living [https://refiningourfocus.com/]

027 | How to Create a Summer That Feels Meaningful, Not Overwhelming | w/Heidi

In this episode of Refining Our Focus in Motherhood, Nikki is joined by her sister Heidi, a homeschooling mom of four living in Alaska, to talk about a simple and fun idea for making summer feel more intentional: summer bingo. Instead of making a long list of everything you feel like you need to do, summer bingo gives you and your family a playful way to write down the things that would be meaningful, enjoyable, challenging, or fun. Some goals can be simple and easy, while others can stretch you a little. The beauty is that it does not have to become one more pressure-filled plan. Nikki and Heidi talk about how this idea can work for moms, children, or the whole family, and how it can help bring a little more joy, focus, and purpose to your summer days.
