Terra.talk
Welcome to Terra.talk, the official podcast of international climate school Terra.do. [https://www.terra.do/climate-fellowship-learning-for-action/?cdc=terratalk] For the first time, we hosted a guest duo on the pod! Johannes Santen and Sterling Watson are two engineers at Natel Energy, a hydropower company whose FishSafe™ turbine designs protect fish from injury as they pass downstream through the turbine and get whacked around by its blades. We navigate the worlds of balancing biodiversity protection with clean energy generation, finding your place in the engineering world, and mechanically rethinking the cutting edge of hydropower - figuratively and literally (thank you Sterling for the joke). Johannes is a Principal Mechanical Engineer at Natel, where he's worked for seven years designing FishSafe hydro turbines. He also builds automation and optimization tools for the team's design and simulation processes, drawing on his background in mechanical engineering and control systems. Previously, he played a key role in designing and commissioning Natel's field-installed turbines and auxiliary equipment. Prior to Natel, he spent five years at a startup developing a high-compression ratio, liquid-tolerant compressor, taking the technology from concept to field operation. Johannes holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Sterling Watson leads experimental and modeling work at Natel Energy to quantify the effects of turbine passage on fish that encounter hydropower facilities, and inform safer, high-performance designs. In 2024, Sterling received the inaugural Rising Star Award from the National Hydropower Association in recognition of her achievement and leadership as an early-career professional in the water power industry.Sterling holds bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. Her passion for everything aquatic extends beyond the office and she can be found swimming, surfing, and sea foraging in the waters of San Francisco during her free time.
